The browser is correctly remembering my home page, but has suddenly forgotten to remember my windows and tabs from last time.

I have set it to do that in General Options.

I have cleared the cache.

I am running Firefox 43.0.1 on WinXP (problem has only just started to happen).

Thanks in anticipation someone can help.

Make sure that Session is unchecked in the CCleaner settings for the Firefox application, but it is always better to use built-in Firefox means to clear data instead of relying upon an external application.

You can let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Keep until: "I close Firefox"
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
  • Clearing Cookies will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
  • Clearing Cookies will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.

You may have corrupt sessionstore file(s).

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the sessionstore file(s). Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox.

Thanks guys for your help, but neither seems to have resolved the problem.

I don't use Private Browsing and it isn't selected.

The only sessionstore file I could find was sessionstore-backups, which I renamed and deleted, again to no avail.

The only other thing I can think of is I have CCleaner, automatically clean up the browser on exit. However, it has been doing that for several months now without problem.

I have downloaded a fresh copy of Firefox.

Any other suggestions folks?

Okay, I have now determined it is the CCleaner that is causing the problem. Having disabled the cleaning the problem is not recurring.

However, as I said it has been working without problem for many months. I have just put the query out on their forum.

That was very good work. Well Done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.

Thanks again guys. It was Session in CCleaner that was checked.

If i clear the history everytime I close Firefox, will it not forget my passwords etc., Some sites FF automatically populates with my password (I am the only one using the PC), and obviously sites like my bank recognise the security information I put in to log in, will it still do so? Finally, It is sometimes useful if I can't remember the name of a particular site I want to use, that as I type it in, it starts giving me clues to the site I want ! Do I lose that facility?

I have acknowledged cor-el as giving me the solution.

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions

If you remove the cookies from a website then this makes the website forget about you.

If you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear Cookies then exclude cookies and instead let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Keep until: "I close Firefox"

Okay. Having changed it to Use Custom Settings ... it now says 'always use private browsing mode; Is that what should happen?

So if I clear history on exit, does that clears the cookies unless I make an exception for individual pages? Even though it says 'Keep Cookies until they expire'.

It seems a lot of hard work to have to go through and list websites where I would like cookies to be kept. I would rather not clear them and leave them until they expire.
