I have lost the small google search bar that sits on the right hand side. All the previous suggestions don't work.

You may have removed the button(s) from the Navigation Toolbar by accident.

If you right-click a toolbar item in normal (non-customize) mode then you can remove this item from the toolbar.

  • "Remove from Toolbar" will remove this item from the Navigation Toolbar and moves it to the Customize palette ("3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize)
  • "Move to Menu" will move this item to the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list
  • "Move to Toolbar" in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list will move this item to the toolbar

Do you still have the Navigation Toolbar with the location/address bar visible?

Are you talking about the Firefox search bar, or another program?

Type about:customizing<enter> in the address bar. In the new window, look for the icon. When you find it, hold down the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be. You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some icons are locked in place.

There is also a Restore Defaults button at the bottom middle.

I could not find the "move to toolbar" button but I think I held down the right mouse button and dragged the word toolbar in customize mode and dropped next to the main address bar. It is there now altough a lot smaller and has gained a green plus sign. That's computers for ya.

I installed extra toolbars, and have lots of room.

You see the green plus next to the search engine icon if the website offers a search engine (notice "Add <search engine>" in the drop-down menu).

Sorry left mouse button, also it could have been sidebars that I dragged.

You can only drag items off a toolbar in customize mode. The context menu I wrote about is what you can use in normal mode to remove an item from the toolbar, so you do not have to open the Customize window to remove an item from the toolbar.

You see this context menu if you right-click the search engine icon (magnifying glass).

Since I have restored the search bar, it is too small and the address bar is too big. I guess it's easy if you know how to do it.

You can place the mouse pointer between the location bar and the search bar and it will become a resize icon that you can drag right or left with the left mouse button pressed to change the relative width of the two bars. The total size stays the same and only the relative sizes change. You need to do that in normal mode (i.e. not in Customize mode).

That's ace, thanks very much and thanks to all those who offered advice even if some things I didn't immediately understand. I got there in the end and all is back to normal.
