Actually I get three tabs on startup.

1-The Yahoo slime 2-Duck Duck go (my default) 3-Options tab

Try resetting your Homepage using the Restore to Default button. See - How to set the home page

Thank you but I had tried that already.

If I use the open window that launched with Yahoo, my default engine and the options tab (remember all three come up upon startup) to go in and restore to default....then open a new Firefox/browser window while the first window is still open, that second window will open as default/normal.

When I close all browser windows and restart Firefox/open a fresh window, the Yahoo disease comes back. there is something embedded somewhere that is overriding resets, etc.

I cant even restore Default search engines in the options Search tab...it's grayed out and I get a big red circle with a red line through it when I hover the cursor over it.

Actually now it's back to just the two or double tabs at startup. 1-Yahoo 2-Default

What is the full URL of the Yahoo page? Sometimes it will contain a parameter that points to a particular program as the culprit.

If your home page setting is clean and Ctrl+n gives you just the one home page, then the problem could be either of these:

(1) Unwanted extension

None are listed in your Question Details > More System Details, so this probably isn't it.

(2) Hacked desktop/taskbar shortcut

To check on this, either:

• Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
• Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

The Target line should not have anything after this part:

• 64-bit Windows, standard 32-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
• 64-bit Windows, test 64-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
• 32-bit Windows: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If any URLs are listed after that, clear them out and save your change. To test, you can either:

• Desktop shortcut: double-click the icon to launch a new window
• Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, click Mozilla Firefox to launch a new window

If you only get your home page, it worked.

So here is what "accidentally" solved it. I wrote this all down then forgot to save when I shut my computer off last night so I'll do my best to remember.

This problem persisted until I clicked on a SAFE link someone sent me in an email. I clicked it and it went right to the page and only that page as a new window opened.

I thought, "huh, that was peculiar". Best I can recall now, I instinctively opened a NEW browser window and there it was again...that Yahoo disease and my home page opened tabs simultaneously.

I went back to the window that opened to the web page from the link, went to options, changed my home page back to default Firefox then clicked another TAB and it opened as the Firefox default.

I then selected Duck Duck Go from the search engine drop down in the search cell (same tab), then went back to options and changed the default home page to "use current pages".

Closed the other window with the two tabs that opened with Yahoo and Firefox home pages, then closed the window with the two tabs of the link I clicked and the tab I used to set my home page...then opened a new browser window and BAM...back to normal.

That is the best of my recollection.

Now when I follow your instructions, it has the proper URL. This fixed itself as I wrote above before I could try your solution.

For anyone that found this solved problem because they had the same problem. By now you know the real solution is to take it slow when you download any free program. In fact, be careful when you download and install even programs you pay for because even those will often include insidious add-ons from sponsors that want to take control of your computer or at least your browser.

When we are looking for a solution, we are often in a hurry to get that free program solution working very quickly and we tend to click past all the "acknowledgements" and "O.K.'s" very fast...we just want the danged program and the rest to shut up and get out of the way.

BUT...buried in many of them is this poisonous junk preying on your desire for a cheap or free "something" and they are banking on the fact that most people will live with whatever malware was installed as long as the computer still works well. But, you are now being monitored by even more people than you were before if you leave that junk on there.

Patience and paying attention is the preventative solution. ALWAYS beware of ALL programs you install. Even the ones you pay for may have junk you don't want and could have deselected had you simply slowed down and thought about every step of the installation procedure.
