Hi. I'm deployed with the Army in Romania. When I found out I was deploying, I had a huge library of movies, tv, and music on an external hard drive. I have it synched with my home system, and to remedy this, got a second external hard drive and a computer with a wee tiny baby sized hard drive (25gb). I never download anything onto it, but it fills up just the same. Now it's gotten so full that I can't save a single thing. My external has 500 free gigs, so I went into Mozilla Options to change the destination folder. Seems easy, right? It won't take though. Not even for a second. I click on the "Browse" button next to where it says: Save files to: (default setting is downloads). I then browse to the external, which, by the way, is working very well otherwise. I get to my desired "new" download folder, select the folder, then the Save files to: still says "Downloads."

I like Firefox, and prefer it to anything out there. My wife likes Safari and Opera as well as Firefox, but I use these only when on her computer. Like most sane people, I loathe Internet Explorer Version: All, but am now at my wits end on this problem. I'm still going to use Firefox for most things, but will use the detestable IE only because I can't dl even a different browser (like I don't even have 10 KB of space!) If you have a fix plz let me know. Downloading a patch is currently not an option, as again, I can't download anything at all.

Could you check under the hood for that preference to see whether it is "locked"? Here's what I mean:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste down and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Is the browser.download.dir preference bolded and "user set" (in which case, try double-clicking it and editing it directly) or italicized and "locked"?

Tiny is not the word I would have used. What is less then tiny? Have you flushed out temporary files (Windows and browsers) ?

Have you tried using a large thumb drive?

Did you check the temp folder in case files get stored in that location?

Firefox starts downloading the file in the background to the Windows temp folder (%TMP%, %TEMP%), so you need to make sure that there is enough free space on the drive with the temp folder.

There has been another case reported where browser.download prefs were locked via a mozilla.cfg file.

  • [/questions/1082119] I'd like to change my download directory but the option is greyed out. Can I rectify this?
