When typing "skype" into address bar, the bar suggests there is an open tab somewhere, with a dodgy Skype-related URL I have never visited. I can't find this open tab. If I just type "skype", it takes me to that URL instead of a search engine site.

I updated skype just before I noticed this, but it might be coincidence. I've since uninstalled skype, but the problem persists.

I've tried using safe mode with add-ons disabled. I've refreshed Firefox. There was one thread on the forum with similar problems (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/979878) , but their solution didn't work for me.

Any ideas where and how this open exists?

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that stores session data. Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

You can disable "Open tabs" for the location/address bar suggestions.

You can set what suggestions to show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar here:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:
    History
    Bookmarks
    Open tabs

Your suggestion led to realize that the profile folder had NO sessionstore.js! I found the file on my Desktop in a folder called "Old Firefox Data"--I don't know if I put it there a hwile back when I did a clean install or if something else put it there, but the folder activity date showed current activity. I don't know how Firefox could work using 2 folders.

Anyway, did a clean install (which required me to delete the AppData folders manually, because Uninstall didn't catch them). The figured out the problem of the weird URL referral returns after I install my backup bookmarks. I traced that URL to a very old bookmark ( I have many bookmarks).

What I don't understand still is why the search bar/address bar takes me to that bookmark URL when I just type "skype". My settings are such that firefox should not suggest bookmarks/history, etc. when I type into the bar, much less decide where I'm going to.

I've deleted those URLs and will later report back on if it worked, but I'm worried that there is some script somewhere randomly doing this for other bookmarks I don't know about. Just wondering if this is a malicious thing or not, at this point.

I might have to not install my backup bookmarks :(
