Hello. I must say it was a long time getting to this question page.

I have windows 7 pro 64 bit. Firefox is my go-to browser. I have learned to set the main page, but of course, each time my notebook goes into the shop, twice now they either alter my browsers (all) though I sayd DO NOT DO THAT and then I find some goofy thing.

This time, it is goofy icons and boxes when I click open a second tab. HOw can I get rid of them? I cannot put up with that. They go or I do. I like Firefox just as it is, they don't need to put those silly things on it. It's cartoon stuff. I just don't like it. Thank you so much in advance for your help. Gina

Maybe a screenshot would help

Also the full troubleshooting infomaton as explained lower down in this post.

A repairshop should not be changing the browser setup. But then we do not know why it was taken in and what had to be done to it.

To find the correct solution to your problem, we need some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:

  1. Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click on help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information.
    • Type about:support into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
  2. At the top of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  3. Now, go back to your forum post, right-click in the reply box and select Paste from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press the Ctrl+V keys) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I'm just wondering if you are referring to the New Tab Page - Customize your Firefox New Tab page.

If not, John99's suggestion for a screenshot will help a lot.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

This is terrible. These forums are supposed to be for helping each other, and there is a comment at the bottom of this that says "indented paragraphs are hard to read...." I did not indent. It was sent by a robot, it says. Doing things like that are distracting, confusing. I couldn't tell if someone answered me or if a robot was. I know how to do a screen shot. And many or most repair shops will do updates or set browsers back to all default as a matter of course, to help rule out if the virus or worn or whatever is infected that or doing something. I got a solution: I did a system restore, which rolled back the browser. And yes, I know about the menu, I know how to set the main page to where I want it. I only came to this forum because I could not figure out how to get rid of this cartoons, not because I didn't look around the browser to try. Once a person gave me fabulous help about how to get rid of the "bing" which was all over the browser and his suggestion took care of it right away. I was so pleased. I hoped someone like that would respond.

Yes I was referring to the tab page. I also learned that this is the new thing added to firefox because it showed up when I did the update. I wish firefox would ask if we wanted that. My notebook was in the shop not because of firefox, but they did the update and lo this is what happened.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Yes I would love to find a way to preserve my preferences because it seems mozilla is changing a lot each time there is an update. I never let a browser save passwords. It is not a wise idea in this day. I don't think firefox should let saving passwords be a default setting, either. But preserving firefox the way I want it is a great help. I do not use a lot of add-ons. Thanks so much.

Fred McD will FEBE prevent browser updates from installing add-ons you don't want?

Thanks,

You can inspect the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page and set that pref to your preferred new tab page.

  • the default new tab page with the tiles is about:newtab
  • the default home page is about:home
  • for a blank page you can use about:blank

The browser.newtabpage.enabled pref should be set to true to use the page set via browser.newtab.url as the new tab page.

See also this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Febe and Opie will save the current Firefox profile and settings. If needed, past saved information can be restored. I keep 40 days of backups (one each day).

Firefox should not install add-ons, but sometimes there is a plugin.

It’s very sad, but many of the software down-loaders / installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

I never just download anything, and always do the manual. I learned that the hard way last year, when a load of malware came down. Fortunately I could get rid of it through the uninstall in my computer, but a lot of them can't be found.

This isn't ads from a download. It is the latest tiles that firefox has. I need to try your suggestion but it is going to take time. I did one once, I forget who told me about it, but it was to get rid of bing and it was using %bing% or something like that anyway, it worked like a charm.
Thanks I will keep your answer. My homepage is blank, it's the second tab that has the tiles.

You can also check the home page setting:

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
