When I open Mozilla another window automatically opens with chilisaving.com - Mozilla, which then opens further identical windows if you try to close it. I've just downloaded Malware Bytes in the hope it would remove the problem, without success.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

Once your system is clean;

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Settings Guard for Firefox {web link} Detects and resets changes to settings that are frequently done by add-ons and application installers.

Adblock Plus {web link} Blocks annoying video ads on YouTube, Facebook ads, banners and much more. Adblock Plus blocks all annoying ads, and supports websites by not blocking unobtrusive ads by default (configurable).

Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon {web link} Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon extends the blocking functionality of Adblock Plus to those annoying pop-up windows that open on mouse clicks and other user actions.

In addition to using automated cleanup tools, I suggest:

(1) Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

(2) Open Firefox's Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • in the Windows "Run" dialog, type or paste
    firefox.exe "about:addons"

In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

If the infection will not allow you to access the Add-ons page:

Try Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

In Safe Mode, extensions are already disabled, but you can remove unwanted ones.

Thanks to both for your feedback.

I managed to find a related and unwanted Extension, which I removed and appears to have resolved the problem.

Hi Richard, feel free to "name names" on the bad extension.

I deleted it yesterday and was pleased to see the back of it! Can I find the deleted item, so I can name it?

No worries, but if you are inspired to dig around, you could look for settings it might have left behind in about:config and see whether any of those list its name:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste exten and pause while the list is filtered

You will see one or more screens full of preferences start with extensions. which were added by current and previous extensions. One of those might match the one you removed.

No luck I'm afraid, but I'll Know where to look next time.

Could I ask another question? When I try to play YouTube videos I get an error mesage saying the plugin is vulnerable and should be updated. Which plugin needs updating?

On YouTube, it has to be Flash. You have version 11.9.something, which is in fact obsolete. Adobe has two series:

Latest: 18.0.x

Extended Support: 13.0.x

You can install the plugin of your choice from this page (look for the one for "plugin-based browsers"): https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html

Many Thanks.

Really helpful advice.
