Firefox is slowing down tremendously. How do I fix it?

I am currently have trouble with Firefox slowing down, idling and or not able to connect to the page that I am clicking to. I have done virus scans on my computer to make sure that there isn't any Malware or Spyware. What do I need to do in order for Firefox to connect to pages and to run quickly?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
