When I open multiple tabs, after I close all but the final two tabs, these last two tabs will not close; instead I get "not responding" or "script not working"

Lately, every time I multitask and open several tabs, when I complete some of the work, and get down to the final two tabs, they will not close. The system will not close the tabs, so I must close the whole browser.

When I try to close the remaining tabs by clicking on the x on the tabs, I get "Not responding" and usually a script run error alert.

I have seen suggestions to just alter the system to let the script run longer, but that seems like a bad fix, since it could open the door for even more damage by malicious software.

I have noticed that Firefox is using a hell of a lot of CPU and even when I first start the browser, I lately am getting a "High CPU" warning, even though I have not even gotten on the web at that point. I have tried a refresh/new install, but that seemed to just make maters worse, since after the refresh, I started getting more high CPU usage alerts.

Any useful suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
