The LONG list of sites that I go to ,like Ebay.com, or WalMart.com, you know 'address'. I have like a list of 15 that wont go away, i click on the tiny box that is next to each address and it just sends me there. Or highlights it in light blue, then zips me there. I try to delete them and it just sends me there. I mean saving a few is ok, ones i go to alot, but ones that I have gone to once, are being saved on that list. And I would like to get rid of them. Hope this makes sense. I am using Windows 7, and obviously FireFox.

Is this a question about Firefox or Thunderbird?

Use these steps to remove saved (form) data from a drop-down list:

  1. click the (empty) input field on the web page to open the drop-down list
  2. highlight an entry in the drop-down list with the mouse or cursor Down key
do not click the mouse or press the Enter key
  3. press the Delete key (on Mac: Shift+Delete) to delete the highlighted entry

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

I guess this answers me question. I get all my sites listed, or none of them listed. Great options. All or nothing:). Why does it light up in light blue and then send me to the site. OR i click on the tiny box in each address and it sends me to the website? Seems like they are all meant to send you to the website whether you want to go or not. I was hoping to right click on the address and find the option of delete. no such option as you know. Thus my question here:). Thanks for the info.

I'm sorry, websites can re-purpose keyboard shortcuts! It would be safer to use either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Show All History (it's at the bottom)
  • (classic menu bar) History > Show All History

How to stop web addresses from appearing in the Firefox location/address bar/how to shut off autofill/autocomplete of web addresses in Firefox location/address bar:

I spent about four hours entering everything I could think of into the Google search bar attempting to find a solution to this annoying issue. But as others have done here, and in other threads about this same issues, the person with the problem is being misunderstood. This is not about History or Bookmarks. It's easy to delete History and Bookmarks, either by highlighting the entry and hitting Delete or setting Firefox to erase History when you close your browser.

However, what you mean are the URLs of websites that drop down when you start typing a web address in the address bar. A main problem finding help with this is Mozilla Firefox calls this a location bar, which I find rather odd, especially since the URL for a website is commonly and widely known by most as a web address, therefore we call it an address bar, not a location bar.

Just figuring that out alone took hours. I finally found the place under Tools to shut this off. Click on Tools at the top of the page (or click on the three horizontal bars in the upper right corner), then Options, then Privacy, .

In Privacy, near the bottom it says: When using the Location bar, suggest: History Bookmarks Open Tabs

Uncheck those, and VOILA, the web addresses (yes, addresses) will no longer autofill. However, be warned, this will mean that ones you frequent more often will have to be typed in. I have not tried this with one or two still checked so not unchecking one or two may cause some of the addresses to remain. You'll have to experiment with this because as soon as I finally found this preference, I unchecked all three.

Oh, wait...there's a problem. And this problem took me even longer to solve, once again, because Firefox uses language in their help pages that is not the way most would word it.

For about a week, I had the blissful joy of going online and typing in a web address and no suggestions dropping down. It was pure heaven to know that from now on, if someone else uses my computer, they don't get a list of all the websites I've ever visited, which is an invasion of one's privacy.

Then suddenly, the addresses were dropping down again! I unchecked those three items under Location Bar again, as the check marks had magically reappeared, but the preferences would not save. I can't be entirely sure why this happened but it may be because I installed the newest version of Advanced System Care. My long, long search led me to info that suggested such a program can prevent preferences from being saved.

I found this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Of course, if you don't have the problem of the preferences not saving, you can ignore this but it might happen so I included this with my answer, and also for others who find this answer. I'll simplify it, and also because what it says here was not quite what I found. But close enough.

Unless you think it's a malware problem, I would skip that, and I'd skip rereshing Firefox. Again, your language is confusing, Firefox! You say restore but the word used is Refresh. Not the same meaning in those two words. Anyway...

Go farther down to where it says, "User.js file overriding preferences", and follow those instructions. They didn't quite match up to what I found but I found the Show Folder after clicking on Troubleshooting, and when I clicked on it, a window with my profile files did open. I found the one, user.js BUT there was no option to open it with Notebook. It only gave me the option of opening it with Command Prompt, which would only flash on the screen for a split second, therefore, I did not have the option of removing the line that says something about enabling preferences. Sorry, I can't remember the exact wording but when you, if you, see it, you'll understand it has to do with saving preferences. Someone in another thread about the problem with preferences not being saved said they only deleted the line about preferences and this solved the problem.

I just deleted the whole file. My computer did not blow up or crash. And to my great relief, it fixed the problem of items appearing in the drop down list in the address, em, location bar.

If you wish some items to remain, you'll have to play around with the three options, History, Bookmarks, and Open Tabs, to see if you can allow some to still remain.

I worded the first part of my long answer here as I did in the hopes that when others enter this in a Google search, they find this quickly.

Wow. Why, oh, why, do such simple wishes as not wanting this or that have to be so hard to find info on and then so complicated to fix?

Hi heather53, thank you for the comment.

For future reference, you can view the contents of a .js file on disk using right-click > Edit. Window may associate it with Notepad, or if you have a fancier editor, that one.

Since double-clicking a script file executes it in the Windows script interpreter, it's much safer to right-click.

I was just editing my answer, polishing it up a bit, and already, a response.

Yeah, about viewing that file. I know it's always a bit iffy to just delete files without going about it properly. I must admit, I cringed a bit, wondering if I had just messed up my whole computer. So far, so good. Thanks for the advice but I can't test that method out as the file is gone now. I didn't double-click on it, actually. I selected the only option given to me to open it, which was Command Prompt.

"executes it in the Windows script interpreter" - You've totally lost me. Don't have a clue what that means. LOL

Note that you may have to hold down the Shift key while right-clicking the file to see the "Open with" dialog if Windows only shows the default action.

Not everybody has software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes.

You should normally remove items that show in the location/address bar drop-down list by highlighting this tem and press (Shift+) Delete. This won't work for bookmarked links that have star at the far right.

Hiding items by modifying what show in the drop-down list isn't really a solution as the items are still stored in the places.sqlite file, but merely hidden and you aren't aware they exist. If items that aren't a bookmark can't be removed then this can be a problem with the places.sqlite file.
