i can open any link on the homepage, but I can't search. I type my search into the bar, hit enter, and all that happens is a "server timed out" message appears.

A few questions:

(1) You mentioned links on the home page. What are you using as your home page?

(2) Which bars are working/not working?

Does search work if you use the address bar or search bar (the search bar being the short bar on the right end of the main navigation toolbar)?

(3) What site you do use for searching?

When you get the error message, is Firefox trying to display the results page? If so, can you check the address in the address bar to make sure it is your preferred search site and not being diverted to some other site?

I get different URLs...

When using the built-in search bar with the default search provider set to Yahoo:

https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=chocolate&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001

When using the search box on the Yahoo home page (not logged in):

https://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=AsgbTERC2ktaebJt71asyCybvZx4?p=chocolate&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-901&fp=1

If neither of those work for you, I wonder whether the search.yahoo.com domain might be blocked for some reason, or whether it is related to those parameters. Does this page load:

https://search.yahoo.com/

Type Yahoo, com in the address bar. Does the search work from here?

It is possible the search engines were corrupted. Delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Delete any search file. Then restart Firefox.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
