Hello. I am at my wits end here. I have 4 different devices I use to access firefox. On every one of them except my desktop the goal.com thing has been replaced. I have posted this before and got some suggestions, tried them all none worked. Tonight I even went so far as to try and get an older version. Went all the way back to 33.0 and ITS STILL THERE! What do I have to do to get rid of this damn thing?? The thing is, I hate soccer. And I really don't want this thing to be the first thing I see when I log on. At first it was just a minor irritation. But now it's really starting to p**s me off! If I completely uninstall then reinstall will that solve it? Thanks for any advice, and have a good day all.

According to the following post, you could physically delete the old snippets from disk: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1026806#answer-643608

I haven't tested it myself, but I think the full procedure for that would be as follows:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a window showing your settings files.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then in the settings folder drill down into the storage folder and then into the persistent folder and delete the moz-safe-about+home folder. Or if you're not sure, you can rename it by adding OLD to the beginning of the folder name.

Start Firefox back up again. Is the World Cup finally over?!

hello nydb, please go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons & remove anything that might relate to goal.com or any other suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc) in the extensions/services section.

Disable or remove Add-ons

Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page

Hey Philipp. Thanks for the advice, but when I go to the extensions tab, everything there I put there. And there is nothing at all in the services tab. Any other ideas? :-(

Do you mean the old soccer artwork on the built-in home page? That definitely should have been replaced over and over again with new snippets. However, in some past threads there was some advice on how to prevent snippet updates by changing a setting. Could you check whether you modified that setting? Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste snip and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl preference is bolded and marked as user set, right-click it and choose Reset.

I'm not sure when Firefox will check again. You might try reloading the home page a few times using Ctrl+Shift+r (on normal web pages, this bypasses the cache and fetches the resources fresh).

Well it was set to user set somehow. I reset it to default. Went and reloaded the home page as you suggested, it's still there. One thing of note. When it do the cntrl shift r thing, for a brief second I see the default fox chasing its tail logo, but then the goal thing takes over. At this point I feel even if I uninstall reinstall it want fix the issue. I am doomed to look at that chit for eternity.

From within Firefox you can use these steps to disable and remove snippets on the about:home page:

  • Set the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref to an empty string on the about:config page
  • Open the about:home page in a tab
  • Open Web Console in this tab (Firefox menu button or Tools > Web Developer)
    https://developer.mozilla.org/Tools/Web_Console
  • Run this command via the command prompt of the Web Console:
    gSnippetsMap.clear()
  • Close the tab with the about:home page
  • Close and restart Firefox
