Bookmarks sorting

So, I'm not 100% sure if this question has already been asked or even answered, but I have a REALLY huge beef with the newer versions of Firefox. See, some versions ago, I could right-click the gray, not-yet-used area to the right of my non-folder bookmarks (on the toolbar, I should add) and then quickly sort all of those li'l buggers by selecting "sort by name", but now that function's been removed without ANY explanation as to why!

I really liked that function, 'cause it made adding new bookmarks AND keeping them sorted really easy. I know I can click the bookmarks menu up-top, then click "show all bookmarks", and then continue fiddling around with stuff for a while to get the exact same result, but that REALLY is too much of a hassle for getting my bookmarks sorted, ESPECIALLY since Firefox USED to have a fully functional and perfectly bug-free feature which let me sort all my non-folder bookmarks in less than two seconds.

So my question here is: why on EARTH did you remove that function?! It was great, and it was (in my something several years of experience with it) completely bug-free, and it didn't affect my experience with Firefox in a negative fashion WHATSOEVER! Can you just PLEASE re-add that function so I can quickly and easily sort my bookmarks WITHOUT the constant hassle of fiddling and muddling with menus and whatsits and whatnots?!

I'm not sure what blank area you were clicking, but here is a reasonably quick method you can use now. Open either:

  • Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+b)
  • Library dialog (Ctrl+Shift+b)

On the left, you should see "Bookmarks Menu". Right-click that and choose Sort by Name.

To propose new features for future versions of Firefox, you can use this site: https://input.mozilla.org/feedback (they tend to get buried quickly here)

Sorry, if you meant the Bookmarks Toolbar, right-click "Bookmarks Toolbar" just above "Bookmarks Menu".

I meant the so-far-unfilled area to the right of the bookmarks toolbar. I'm sorry if I was being unclear in my original post.

Anyway, I don't see a reason to post a suggestion to add this as a feature, because for all intents and purposes, it ALREADY IS. It was removed several versions ago for no reason.

What Mozilla giveith, Mozilla takeith away.  :-<

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

Sort By Name is only available if you right-click a folder and not for individual bookmarks.

Except it WAS available some versions ago, about 5-6 months ago tops. It was a feature, but now it's been removed for no reason. Didn't you read my post(s)?

You can also do this in the Bookmarks menu if you right-click the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

  • Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar

Ugh... this is freakin' hopeless. I'm not getting ANY helpful feedback here, AT ALL! I am NOT asking how to sort my bookmarks, I AM ASKING WHY THE MOZILLA GUYS REMOVED A FEATURE WHICH LET ME SORT THEM VERY EASILY.

Looks like a side effect of the landing of this bug:

  • bug 1006989 - The Bookmarks Toolbar Items context shouldn't have "Cut", Copy", "Delete", or "Properties" when right-clicking on a blank area

You can consider to file a regression bug and ask to revert this for placesContext_sortBy:name

Sorry that you didn't get an answer to your question, but there isn't really an answer. Mozilla doesn't give reasons or explanations for why they change things.

Since the behavior is consistent between the Bookmarks Menu and Bookmarks Toolbar and Bookmarks Sidebar and Library dialog -- Sort by Name only appears when you right-click a folder (or in the Sidebar and Library, a top level container such as Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar) -- there might be a specific bug for that which may or may not have an explanation for it.

I suspect you just want it back and don't want to waste time researching history. But if you are feeling dogged in this pursuit, Google shows a lot of bugs containing the phrase "sort by name": https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Abugzilla.mozilla.org+%22sort+by+name%22 (or you can try searching on Bugzilla, but I find it a little tricky to get the right results).
