Firefox 31.0 worked without any problems with current Mountain Lion OSX, but after loading Mavericks, it frequently locks up. I cannot change tabs or perform any function. If I am able to Quit, I can then not reopen when clicking on the icon. Only solution is to Force Quit. Even then, I sometimes have to restart the computer to get Firefox to open.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar. Followed by;

Windows; Tools > Options Linux; Edit > Preferences Mac; application name > Preferences

Then Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

At first it appeared to solve the problem, but after a little more use, the problem recurred. The really irritating thing is that after you Force Quit Firefox and try to open it again, it results in the restored tabs just forever trying to connect. To get Firefox to resume normal function requires restarting the computer.

Try to open Firefox using a URL shortcut. Does it still do it?

While the browser is open on any page, mouse to the address bar, hold down the left button on the icon, and place the shortcut on your desktop.

I have taken this action and will operate Firefox in this mode for a period of time. I will respond immediately if the problem recurs. If, after a significant amount of time, the problem does not recur, I will restart in normal mode and monitor its performance.

After operating Safe Mode for an extended period of time, Firefox did require Force Quit twice, but this was far fewer for the time spent than when operating in Normal mode. Force Quit in Normal Mode seems to generally be needed when browsing websites using Flash, such as Fox News, ESPN, etc.

Once Force Quit is required, computer restart is required in order for Firefox to act normally; otherwise, it will either not open at all or if opened, websites constantly try to open, but do not.

I have downloaded the latest version of Flash, but it did not seem to make any difference.

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Open the Add-ons Manager <Control><Shift> A and disable All of them.
