in short, outlook or hotmail inbox opens, click on an email, after a few seconds auto-refresh goes back to inbox, then back into the message, any arrow keys pressed goes to next or previous emails.

this is almost similar to the issue seen here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/980677 but, the chain has been archived.

safe mode does not re-create the issue, but cannot remain on safe mode forever. so, how to resolve this please?

Firefox's Safe Mode has a number of features, but perhaps the most relevant is that it disables your extensions temporarily while you're in Safe Mode.

That might be relevant to this or other websites if any of your extensions try to make changes to the page that could possibly trigger a reload, or try to make changes before the site is fully settled down.

You may need to experiment a bit to determine which extension(s), if any, are involved. You could start by disabling all nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if you can live without it for 24 yours, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that help with the site? If not, you may need to check your more important extensions, for example, do they have a way to make an exception for the live.com site.

I meant to ask: is this a new issue you're experiencing after upgrading to Firefox 31, or is Firefox 31 your first version of Firefox, or did this also occur for you in previous versions of Firefox?

more options

1) All extensions disabled but problem does not go away. 2) Issue never existed earlier. Have always used FF for last 5 years. Sorry, cannot remember which version created the issue because browser is on auto-update mode.

Firefox 31 is only 10 days old, so if you have had this problem for a couple weeks or more, it probably is not specific to Firefox 31. Do you have a rough idea of how much further back it might go?

Safe Mode disables a number of other features, including hardware acceleration of graphics (works around incompatibilities with your graphics card driver software), and JavaScript compilers (works around issues with complex script incompatibilities). These features can be manually disabled for testing.

Hardware acceleration:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

This takes effect the next time you exit and start Firefox up again.

JavaScript compilers:

This seems to have changed. I will need to research it.

Thanks but hardware acceleration un-check did not help. Issue probably started 6 weeks ago (sorry, that is only a best possible guess). btw, 3-bar menu does not have options, but the settings wheel has it. Thank you for trying to help solve this issue.

I'm not familiar with the settings wheel. Do you have a theme that customizes the toolbar area (beyond just changing the background image)?

When you open the new message, is it within the same Firefox tab, or in a new Firefox tab in the same window, or in a separate Firefox window?

more options

1) attached FF settings wheel location. not sure anymore if that was customized. been there for a while now.

2) all actions on the same tab. no separate tab or window.

Thank you for helping.

Thank you for the screen shot. I forgot that the Options icon could be moved to the toolbar, so that is the same button.

Does this happen every time you open a message, or only on the first message?

I don't have any other specific suggestions, just the usual:

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

Options button > Advanced (or Tools menu > Options > Advanced)

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove your live.com cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Any change?

Thank you for all the help.

1) Works ok after network cache cleared and made override to 0MB. But, does not work after browser closed and re-opened.

2) Did not work

BTW, this link also has similar issues - http://www.msn.com/?ocid=mailsignout

after 20+ seconds, the screen refreshes automatically and slideshow on the page resumes from page1

Has this got anything to do with flash plugins on this specific site? If that is the cause, then why would it not affect other sites?

If nothing else can be done to resolve this issue, please feel free to close it.

Thank you!!

Could the problem be that the page is loading so slowly, that you are opening the message before it finishes? Pages may schedule scripts to run when loading finishes, so if there is a timing problem, very strange things can happen. Usually a small "x" will appear at the end of the address box area while a page is still loading. (After loading is completed, it turns into the reload arrow.) As a test, if you still see that "x" when you are about to open a message, try clicking it to stop the slow load before opening the message.

No, that is not the case. It reloads automatically after 15-20seconds or so, when the inbox list page is completely loaded and you are either going down the list with arrow keys or opened one of the emails.

If the link in last post did not create issues for you, then never mind, will live with this issue, though its annoying.

Thank you for your help !!

Actually the MSN page does reload. A few seconds after loading, there is a push-down at the top of the page advertising IE11. I also got the infobar to allow Flash (I have Flash set to click-to-play) and I didn't get around to clicking it. Then after a while the ad slid back up and the page reloaded.

I don't see anything like that in Outlook mail.

Reloading the MSN page didn't lead to a repeat; I guess it set a cookie that it already tried to tempt me with IE11 and not to bother again. ;-)

But -- I need to test Outlook again in a clean profile. Because I use NoScript, and probably have some of the advertising servers blocked, I may be missing some behavior related to those external servers.

More info:

Works with no issues on chrome.

Another issue: cannot do 'save-as' anymore. FF Hangs. Close application gives this info:

 Problem Event Name:	AppHangB1
 Application Name:	firefox.exe

then next window:

 Problem Event Name:	APPCRASH
 Application Name:	plugin-container.exe

Tried all FF forum suggested fixes. None worked.

And, this works ok on chrome too. No issues with the 'save-as'.

So, its firefox's handling of plugins, extensions, and add-ons, seems to be the cause for both issues. Hoping that the FF team addresses these soon before I decide to switch to a better browser (chrome).

Please feel free to close this issue. Thank you again for helping.

If all else fails, it might be time to try Firefox's Reset feature. This article has the details: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings. Note that your extensions will not carry over.

more options

Thank you. Reset did not work either. Found work around for save-as issue: re-install FF and when problem recurs install another version (beta) of FF. Toggle back to regular FF (non-beta) when problem occurs again. Takes a minute or two but thats ok. This workaround does not fix the original outlook issue though. So, moving over to Chrome. Thanks for your help. Btw, Cannot find a close-issue button - where or how can we close this issue?
