New tab page won't change when I do the about:config thing.
So I updated Firefox a couple days ago. Whenever I open a new tab it take me to this Bing search thing. I Googled how others were fixing this and the about:config thing isn't working. I go to edit the site that will come up I type in about:blank or Google.com and it just stays the Bing search thing.
Any help would be wonderful since I just want to get rid of the new tab that keeps coming up each time >_<

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.
please go to the firefox menu
> addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.
After you have done that;
Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type about:config. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter browser.newtab.url and press enter. browser.newtab.url tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened. If you want, right click and select Modify. You can change the setting to;
about:home (Firefox default home page),
about:newtab (shows the sites most visited),
about:blank (a blank page),
or you can enter any web page you want.
The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as browser.startup.homepage.
I'm not precisely clear as to what to go looking for when my modification to the newtab url is ignored. I've run malwarebytes, spybot S&D, and AVG to get rid of malware. What now?
Run several or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one
program misses something, another may pick it up.
It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware. Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is there for. Also, Windows > Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Go thru the list and use a web search to check any that you don't know what they are.
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
- Microsoft Safety Scanner
- MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
- Hitman Pro
- ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

I'm running into this same issue. I know about the process of how to change it from "about.config" but it always changes itself back after I restart my browser. Any additional comments?
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
That reply was very confusing. I need a more clear response of what to do.
Can you change the value of the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page?
If you can't change it at all (the value is locked) or only temporarily during the session then there is something wrong with the file that stores the prefs (i.e. prefs.js in the profile folder) or an extension or other software is preventing the modification of the pref and the above mentioned KB article should have some suggestions to deal with this issue.
Yes, I can always change it, but it always changes itself back to the old page after I restart my browser.
You can check if you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension. You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there. You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
There is also software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
I would like to get some simple instructions please. I found the folder, but now I don't know what to do there.
