In Firefox 20.0.1 I cannot see any downloads in an active private window

Basically the download manager doesn't seem to work at all in the private viewing mode. There is no way to track downloads in the private viewing mode. The only thing I can do to find them is to manually go to the firefox "Temp" folder in windows and search there.

Did you switch from the new Download Panel to the old Download Manager? I think that might not have been updated for the changes to private browsing. You may still be able to view Downloads one of these two ways. Could you check on these and report whether either of them shows the downloads?

  • In a new tab, type or paste about:downloads into the address bar and press Enter
  • Open the Library dialog to History using Ctrl+Shift+h then click Downloads in the left pane

These are actually the identical list, just accessed different ways.

Edit: To tear off the about:downloads tab into a separate window, you can click on the tab and drag downwards about an inch and then release, or right-click the tab > Move to New Window.

Thank you! I can now see the downloads. But I don't understand why the toolbar button won't let me access the list. Do you know how I could change that?

Nevermind I was able to figure it out. Apparently I had an ancient download manager tweak addon installed that was messing with things.

Thanks so much for your help!

Not sure if it's visible, but there is a new download arrow that will turn into a tiny progress bar during downloads and turn green when the download completes. That's probably not very clear, so check out the video demo in this article: Where to find and manage downloaded files in Firefox.
