I created the folder called "h". I called earthlink and they couldn't fix it. Told me to call Mozilla. The number was no help (no actual person).

I have the folder called "Local Folders" which has subfolders of Inbox, Sent, etc etc. I think it's the default,

On a direct line directly below Local Folders is the folder I created, simply called "h"."h" is NOT a subfolder - it has same status as Local Folders above it. I can't delete it. When I go to account settings and highlight "h" I go to bottom where it says "account actions" , the "remove account" is grayed out.

The earthlink chat people took over my computer and still couldn't fix it. They spent an hour and finally gave up. (They made some changes when in control of my computer and I had to remind them to undo those changes which was annoying)

If you right-click the offending folder, does it not show a pop-up menu with a deleted option?

more options

When I right click the offending folder, It does not show a pop-up menu with a deleted option.

Usually, working email account folders show up alongside Local Folders. It is therefore normal to have at the minimum two accounts; a real working account and Local Folders. I suspect "h" might be your proper working account.

If you select "h" and right-click it, is there an option to view its settings or its properties?

A screen shot would be most helpful, showing us the folder pane containing Local Folders and any other accounts. Set it to View|Folders|All to make the screenshot useful.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem

You can blot out actual any email addresses that appear, using Paint or your favourite graphics program to do this. .

Do you mean

  1. there is no pop-up menu, or
  2. there is a pop-up menu but no "delete" option?
more options

When I right click on folder "h", I get the following menu

Open in New Tab Open in New Window Search Messages

New Folder

Settings

When I click "settings", I get a screen entitled "Account Settings". Below that heading is "Local Folders" in bold with 7 sub-folders. (Junk mail, etc).

Then below those is another bold heading titled "h". This is the account I myself created for reasons I have forgotten and is the account I want to remove/delete. There's nothing in it.

Then there is an equal amount of white space to the bottom where, under a line, is "Account Actions" in a separate box at the very bottom.

When I click on "Account Actions", I get 6 choices.

Add Mail Account Add Chat Account Add Feed Account Add Other Account

Set As Default Remove Account

These last two (set and remove) are grayed out so that they do not respond to the mouse click.

Now I will go and try to figure out how to do a screen shot. Thank you for the links for that and for your time and help.

more options

Sorry - I can get the screen shot to paint but I can't get it any further. I tried copying it to Word and then to this box but that didn't work either. I tried to copy the word link and post that here but no dice.

You'd think after so many years on computers I'd know how to do a screen shot, but I don't.

In Paint, ctrl+v or Edit|Paste to insert your screenshot. Blot out any personal information such as your email address. Then go to File|Save As and save it as a png file. Upload that png file to this forum, using the button below the text window.

The screen shot is in the small box below the text but how do I get it to the reply box? I tried but nothing worked.

You have renamed things. "h" is Local Folders. What you have as "Local Folders" is your working POP-connected earthlink account.

You can't delete either of these without breaking Thunderbird. I'd urge you to rename "Local Folders" to show your earthlink account's email address, and rename "h" to "Local Folders".

Many thanks for your help. If I can't delete the thing, I can't delete the thing. At least you gave me an answer not like the earthlink people who gave up.

more options

That sounds defeatist. It's meant to have two accounts, typically a working POP or IMAP account and Local Folders. OTOH some folk use Thunderbird exclusively for RSS feeds or newsgroup reading, so would have Local Folders and then a Feeds or News account.

The easiest way to hide one of them would be to set the POP account to use Local Folders/Global Inbox. Then you'd only see what is properly named "Local Folders".

I wonder why you saw fit to rename them in the first place?

more options

Obviously I haven't made it clear enough. I'll try again.

I CREATED THE "h" ACCOUNT. IT DID NOT EXIST BEFORE I CREATED IT. NOTHING THERE WAS EVER MEANT TO HAVE TWO ACCOUNTS. BEFORE "h" THERE WAS ONLY ONE ACCOUNT. I REPEAT, ONE ACCOUNT. IT WAS CALLED "LOCAL FOLDERS".

I NEVER SAW FIT TO RENAME ANYTHING. I CAN ONLY ASSUME YOU ARE SAYING THIS TO SUPPORT YOUR OWN POSITION.

AS FAR AS NEWGROUPS AND RSS THEY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING. WHY YOU BROUGHT THEM UP IS ANYBODY'S GUESS.

YOU ASK WHY I SAW FIT TO RENAME IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS IS ENTIRELY YOUR OWN CONCLUSION. TO REPEAT - I-NEVER-RENAMED-THEM-IN-THE-FIRST-PLACE-OR-IN-ANY-PLACE. YOU ARE BEATING A DEAD HORSE.

YOU SHOULD HAVE JUST SAID THANK YOU AND GONE ON YOUR WAY. I DID UNTIL I SAW THIS LAST POST OF YOURS.

WHAT I DIDN'T SAY, BUT PERHAPS SHOULD HAVE, WAS THAT YOUR ANSWERS WERE FULL OF JARGON, ASSUMED TOO MUCH, AND BADLY NEEDED SOME PLAIN ENGLISH CLARITY.

FRANKLY, THE ONLY THING I REALLY UNDERSTOOD WAS THE DELETE PORTION. I CAN ONLY GUESS AT WHAT 'BREAKING THUNDERBIRD' IS SUPPOSED TO MEAN.

"QUIT WHEN YOU'RE AHEAD" IS A SAYING YOU SHOULD MEMORIZE.

I created the folder called "h".
So we can't lay the blame on earthlink.

Your Thunderbird is horribly messed up, In your position I'd want to get it straight, or at least understand what "Local Folders" is used for. If you ever add a further email account it will become quite nonsensical. (I have 8 or so accounts.)

Whatever else you do, if you ask for any further help, please provide a link to this thread, so any other would-be helper won't have to do all the same reverse engineering all over again.

Thank you.

more options

And thank YOU.

I have added several email accounts and thunderbird has never become "quite nonsensical". I doubt I will require further help since you have answered it for me quite adequately.

In any case, since I was the one who simply chose an option of adding an account and called it 'h", I have no idea why such a simple allowed operation in the program can't be undone.

I have now spent hours on it at earthlink and here, so I will not be spending any more time on the problem.

But thank you again.

You cannot add a Special Account in Thunderbird. Thunderbird creates one by default called Local Folders. Whether or not your want to admit it sometime in the past you renamed Local Folders to h so you could rename your actual email account local folders. God only knows why. You can huff and puff and type in all caps all you want that is what happened.
