NOTE: BEFORE READING, CHECK UPDATE BELOW.

I've seen this issue being addressed on some other sites and I've actually seen similar questions, but this is bugging me because the specifics on those questions/threads aren't explaining why this glitch occurs in the first place.

The issue has recently been that when I visit certain sites that contain multimedia content (such as YouTube), this will occasionally (at random) cause the browser to display a black screen. The entire screen is not black, but rather the content portion of the browser displays a black overlay. The actual content is still loaded on the page, but it's essentially eclipsed by the random black layer.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) and FF 53.0.2 (32-bit). Video card is NVIDIA.

I've only had this issue for the past week and I'm not sure why it's been happening.

I am not willing to start a new profile or reinstall Firefox (not as a solution anyway).

I want to pinpoint the cause of why this issue is only occurring once every while and why it only happens when I'm loading a video.

I've attempted to get clues from the Browser Console, but I'm not well-endorsed in knowing how to use that information.

What irks me is that the pages load in completion, and the page elements are still accessible, but the black layer is stuck on any and all new/current tabs.

The only hot-fix I've been able to remedy is restarting the browser.

My extensions are as follows:

ADB Helper

Adblock Plus 2.8.2

Classic Theme Restorer 1.6.6

Flagfox 5.1.22

Ghostery 7.2.0.25

Noscript 5.0.4

Search Preview 8.10

StumbleUpon 4.21

Valence 0.3.1

All of these are enabled, currently.

I could've tried disabling my extensions as a means to verify if any add-on/extensions is the cause, but since this happens randomly, I cannot pursue that as a practical means for recon.

Instead, I opted for the logging approach--which lead me to the Browser Console--but as I mentioned, I don't know what the messages mean. I hoping it would leave a hint of some sort that would identify a reason for me to deactivate an extensions, but there hasn't been anything like that as far as I'm concerned.

So, with that having failed, I'm left no choice but to continue my efforts with the help of the community.

If there's something you need clarified or would like for me to expand on, then please ask (in detail).

To give a sample of what I see when this happens, a screenshot has been attached.

EDIT: It is possible to see the newtab page when opening a new tab, and that is probably the only instance while the black layer is active where the black layer cannot touch. I'm assuming all views loaded by FF are safe, but any external pages just go straight to hell.

I also would like to add that I have updated all my drivers and I haven't ever had this issue until now.

See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I checked the day prior, didn't see anything.

I checked the day this comment came in and there was one. I installed it.

I waited a day.

After that day, I hadn't seen anything wacky.

Day two after the fact, the thing comes up again.

What can I do to see what's causing this? Can any of the dev tools help?

Have you tried Firefox Safe Mode?

Yes, but since it happens randomly, I can't really cause it to happen.

I was my initial assumption that it was due to streaming media or video content that this error was happening, but now it's started to happen when I'm on any kind of page.

I'd like to very well assume that it's one of my extensions, but without proper validation/verification, I cannot really hammer down on that theory.

UPDATE:

Others have been seeing this issue as well and have now posted a formal bug here.

We'll just have to wait and see how this gets resolved and if it can.

Happened to me once. I didn't notice the flash games my son was playing on other Firefox window when I'm about to purchase and check on this page: http://4wheelonline.com/Towing/Blue_Ox.207713 The black screen overlay, I checked the Nvidia driver and it's up to date. What I did is re-install the Nvidia driver and didn't happen again.
