after having some computer problems both firefox and thunderbird wouldn't start, I kept getting errors that it was already running and had to be closed and after hitting the close button I got the error that said it couldn't find the profile, I uninstalled both and reinstalled but still had the same problem so I went to the trouble shooting and found some things to try one being to make another profile in profile manager so I did and it let me start both firefox and thunderbird but the problem I have is if I shut them down I have to start all over by going into profile manager and creating a new profile, what step am I missing and why won't it keep my profile? one other note not n\knowing if this will mean anything or not but when I go to the profile manager I don't see any of my profiles on the first screen only had default but yet they are in my profile folder.

any help will be appreciated because I am lost at what to try next. Thanks Jim

Does it go back to the old profile, or stay with the new?

You may have a corrupt profiles.ini file. Close Firefox. Open your file browser to this hidden location:

  • Mac: *~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
  • Linux: *~/.mozilla/firefox/
  • Windows: %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • *C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\

Locate the profiles.ini file. Then rename or delete it.

Fred

I tried all of the above and I was able to go into the profile manager and creat a new profile and then I could open firefox from that program and use it but if I shut down the firefox browser and start it back up I get the same problems and have to go through all of the steps to get back in.

Thanks Fred

you made me think when you said that the name might had changed,

some how my user name was put in a file of it's own out side of the user folder and wouldn't let me move it back so I had to make a copy and in doing so it was called Jim-copy and that's all it took I was able to put another copy of my profile in the user folder and this time it didn't have the -copy after it and both firefox and thunderbird started up like nothing happened so thanks again for the ideas.

Jim
