Does Firefox support java applets if the "Next generation plugin" is disabled via the Java plugin control panel ?

In order to run our applet in Internet Explorer we have to disable the "Next Generation Plugin" in the Java plugin control panel. This seems to work with Internet explorer as our applet runs as it always has. The same does not hold true for Firefox from V3.6 up to current version.
