THe error msg appears which says a script has stopped working. Also implies Chrome and Macafee have something to do with the crash. I have deleted McaFee, emptied cache, unsinstalled and reinstalled Thunderbird - all suggestions from another thread. But nothing solves my issue.

Uninstall is often followed by re install. Especially if it did not fix the issue.

Have you tried Thunderbird safe mode?... hold shift while the program starts Have you compacted your folders? File menu (alt+T) > compact folders..

I have tried in safe mode. Little noticeable difference. I have compacted my folders. Still aggravatingly sliw/nob responsive.

No mcafee, I did compact folders and try in safe mode. Safe mode helped a bit, but still slow. For instance over 30 seconds to delete a single email.

I asked about two folders. Three answers of exactly he same thing indicates your not checking the size of the deleted or trash folder.

I only saw you ask about trah folder, and I responded to that question. i am frustrated, and doing this from my phone because I cant seem to get access from computer.

hang on..... can not get web access to this site? or just he emails it sends.

I am asking, because it might be the issue is wider than just Thunderbird.

Please restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

I can access TB and my account, but cant find way of seeing anything more than the question I orinally asked. I cant see this dialogue. And trying to figure it out on iphone is stretching my limited capacity.

If you right click your inbox and select properties and then Repair these later messages do not show?

Just as a trial. Turn off your phone reboot your computer and see if it is still slow. Strange I know. But try it. iPhones have a habit of monopolizing the mail server. So could actually be the cause of the problem.

Right clicking repair has no effect. Could mot start computer in safe mode (windows 7)holding f8 key when restarting. Previous similar complaints have focussed on mcafee and javascript problems. Is my problem not indicative of that? Phone is dying so I have had it for the night.

slowness has many many causes. usually external to Thunderbird. Hence the request to try in safe mode on Windows. It disable almost all "security" software which is the usual cause. McAfee is by far the most common cause. But it is not alone. Norton Kaspersky and Alvira are regular contenders but none are exempt. Just as an add-on that worked fine in a previous version can cause slowness and hangs in a new version. Holding the left shift key while starting Thunderbird disables add-ons.

Re safe mode. I looked up the instructions on the Microsoft site. Unfortunately some manufactures see it as their job to change the process. Lenovo in particular springs to mind. I suggest you check on the web site of your computer manufacturer for their specific instructions to enter safe mode.

Catch you tomorrow I hope.

thanks for your explanation. I have a Dell, less than 5 months old. Their website says holding f8 while booting will bring up advanced boot options. If i choose that I see 2 options relating to booting in secure boot (on or off) . Is that what I want? Mcafee came with the system, and I uninstalled the parts I was allowed. There is one directory - mcafee livesafe- which will not allow itself to b uninstalled, though it is disabled in TB. No other security enabled.

Perhaps use the tool to uninstall from McAfee. https://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

If there are still folders you can not uninstall it is not uninstalled.

Dell offer the following instructions to start in Safe mode http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN55355/EN

To quote
Immediately, start pressing the F8 key once a second until the Advanced Boot Menu appears. If the computer starts up into Windows, turn the computer off and try again. Press the Up Arrow or Down Arrow key to highlight Safe Mode with Networking, then press Enter.Oct 3, 2014

Thankyou for pointing me to Mcafee removal tool. Using that seems to have done the trick!
