Why is the address bar not allowing search anymore?

I have always searched on Firefox by just typing what I want into the address bar. It would bring up the Google results automatically. It just suddenly stopped working-like I did it while searching for one thing and ten minutes later opened a different tab and it didn't work anymore. When I do try to search from the address bar the screen says "Unable to Connect...Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 'search term'. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

I don't know the developers' answers but I have to say that this is good. Sometimes when intending to type a password into a web form, the cursor moves to the address bar and I don't notice until I hit the Enter key and get a list of Google matches instead of my e-mail or whatever. It's more common for the cursor to move from a password field to a username field because the page finishes rendering after I already started typing my password, but sometimes the cursor moves to the address bar for unknown reasons.

Did you try to close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can consider to use a keyword search and add a keyword to the Google search engine via "Manage Search Engines" in the search bar search engine menu.
