First I discovered I could no longer type a web address directly in the address bar and get to a site. Then on advice from online support, I reset Firefox, and the result was I lost all my bookmarks. I tried backing up to a recovery point but it did no good. HELP!

For best results, I wouldn't use Windows' System Restore feature. This can lead to mixed up files that don't work well together...

Are you low on disk space by any chance? The Reset feature duplicates a lot of data and sometimes it fails to complete when disk space is low.

Could you check for your old settings folder in the following two places:

  • Windows desktop: folder named "Old Firefox Data"
  • Firefox Profiles folder: Copy the following and paste it into the Search box on the Start menu, then press Enter:

    %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You will definitely find your current (incomplete) folder, but you may also find an older folder (old meaning last changed just before your reset).

If you find one of these, to recover bookmarks, you can restore a backup following the steps in this article: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. At the step where you Choose File, you will point Firefox to that profile folder wherever you found it, and then into the bookmarkbackups folder inside it.

You also can salvage other settings from the folder. This article might help, or post back for more specific assistance: Restore bookmarks, passwords, and data from an old Firefox profile.

Any luck so far?
