My bookmarks were lost after upgrading from vsn 4.01 to vsn 5

Earlier today I upgraded to vsn 5.0 of Firefox. Most of my bookmarks have now disappeared - there are 4 probs in particular: 1) On the bookmarks toolbar, there now are NO icons for my favourite websites 2) On the Bookmarks dropdown menu, I originally had a mixture of folders (going to submenus) and bookmarked websites; the latter are now disappeared and only the former are visible. 3) I went Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore . I get an error message "Unable to process the backup file". Why aren't backup files compatible across release vsns of Firefox? 4) How do I recover my missing bookmarks - I had DOZENS of them!
