Block websites from storing site preferences or login status in Firefox

Cookies and other site data is stored on your computer by websites you visit. The stored data contains information such as site preferences and login status. This article describes how to block websites from storing this data in Firefox.

Block cookies for a single website

You can use the Page Info window to set Firefox to block cookies from one website:

  1. Go to the website you wish to block from setting cookies in Firefox.
  2. Right-clickHold down the control key while you click within the page and select View Page Info.
  3. In the Page Info window, select the Permissions panel.
  4. Underneath Set Cookies, remove the check mark from Use Default.
  5. Change the setting to Block.

  6. Close the Page Info window.

Remove any cookies that the website has already set in Firefox. For instructions, see Delete cookies to remove the information websites have stored on your computer.

Block cookies for more than one website

If you have more than one website you want to block, using the Page Info window for each site can be time-consuming. You can block individual websites by entering their address into your Firefox OptionsPreferences Exceptions list for cookies and site data, as follows:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Select the Privacy & Security panel and go to the Cookies and Site Data section.

  3. Next to Accept cookies and site data from websites (recommended)Accept cookies and site data click Exceptions…. The Exceptions - Cookies and Site Data dialog box will open.

  4. Type in the exact address of the site you want to block.
  5. Click Block.
  6. Click Save Changes to finish.

  5. Type in the exact address of the site you want to block.
  6. Click Block.
  7. Click Save Changes to finish.

Viewing a list of blocked sites

To see a list of sites that you have blocked from setting cookies:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Select the PrivacyPrivacy & Security panel and go to the History section.
  3. In the drop-down menu next to Firefox will:Firefox will choose Use custom settings for history.

Block cookies for all sites

To set Firefox to block cookies from all websites:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu Fx57Menu and choose Options.Preferences.
  2. Select the PrivacyPrivacy & Security panel and go to the History section.
  3. In the drop-down menu next to Firefox will:Firefox will choose Use custom settings for history.
  4. Remove the check mark from Accept cookies from sitesAccept cookies from websites.
  5. Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

  2. Select the Privacy & Security panel and go to the Cookies and Site Data section.
  3. Select Block cookies and site data (may cause websites to break)Block cookies and site data and then use the drop-down menu next to Type blocked to choose the type of cookies to block. The options are listed in order from least restrictive to most restrictive. Some sites will not work properly with all cookies blocked.
