Missing Group Tabs

more options

Hello. I love the feature. I didn't know it was a new feature because I started using Firefox around April. I saved my group tabs, very happy about it. Then I close and save it, then I opened it again, it was great!

I am a student, I use my group tab to add the tabs that have the resources that I need to, and would also like to study for more knowledge and for my next school year.

There was no problem at that whole time. In April 21, there was no problem until April 22, 23 no problem. But I forgot my charger at that time, because I was at my mothers house. Then I wait for weeks for my charger to come back, about 2 weeks for my laptop to revive there in my grandparent's house.

When I got my charger, and opened firefox. Wait, but at first when I opened firefox, it showed me that there is a new update, an update about tab groups that I already now. I looked at my group tabs, and they are not there anymore.

What should I do to get them back.

Hi Allyson, if "Recently Closed Windows" is grayed, and your missing tab group is not on the All Tabs List drop-down, then you may need to mine data from an older session history file.

(1) To open your profile folder...

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, find the Profile Folder row and click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch Windows' File Explorer listing the contents of your current profile folder.

(2) Copy out session history files

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location such as your Documents folder.

(3) What files did you find?

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update {since you are referring to an incident in April, you may need to look at one of these files}

Sometimes you can tell from the last modification time which one will have your missing tabs, but not always.

Optional File Contents Preview

These compressed files are a pain to view, so I created a tool on my website to list out their contents. If you want to try that, you can drag and drop it onto the large box on the following page, then click the "Scrounge URLs" button:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/scrounger.html

If you don't get a list within 15 seconds, that probably means the script is caught in a loop. You may need to close the tab to avoid a tab crash and then try again in a new tab.

If you get a useful list, use the "Save List" button to archive it as a web page of clickable links for future reference, in case no other approach is successful.

Please enter about:config in the address bar and switch browser.tabs.groups.enabled to true.

After making sure that the Tab Groups feature is enabled, use the List All Tabs button to find your groups. If the current window's list doesn't show the missing groups, check whether you have any closed windows:

First, if Firefox didn't already restore your previous session windows and tabs, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Restore Previous Session
  • (menu bar or Alt+S) History > Restore Previous Session

Second, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > History > Recently Closed Windows
  • (menu bar or Alt+S) History > Recently Closed Windows

Any luck so far?

Thankyou for responding sir. About the second tip on recently closed windows, I couldn't click it, it is unclickable by having its gray text. How to restore that? And officially get my missing group tab?

Hello @TyDraniu. Thankyou for responding too. When I typed about:config as what you said in the address bar, and typed browser.tabs.groups.enabled true, but without typing true and it already said true. I dont know if I am but I saw it at the middle, but I only know this feature today and I can use it in the future.

Thankyou very much!

Thankyou very much!! I know find and remembered when and what are does tabs in my group. Your help really helped me! When I saw the saved group tabs at the upgrade file that is at Apr 17, it showed me my first ever group tab, and that made me remember the date when I started actually using group tab, the time I keep my resources. It didn't have my currently saved group tabs, but it gave me a clue.

I think it was my fault on why my saved group tabs are gone, or maybe something I don't know. The thing I did was I opened the manage history and find the date where my tabs that I have grouped are, it does not have the group tab history but I'm finding my tabs that I opened that time.

The program you made is actually really helpful, I am mind blown on how'd you do that. I will save your program in my group tabs. It actually showed my history on that time. I wish there are some sort of files in the history management that I could upload it to your scrounger program and find my stuff easily.

'Goodmorning jscher2000.'

Just a while ago my group tabs disappeared. And I use your tool in your website and I was so glad, I feel successful as I recover my group tabs. As you said, I will now download this file in my download's folder. I am here, again, thanking you. (:
