Log ins lost every time I start FireFox - only started happening recently.

I've checked a couple of the "similar topics" before posting here. I'm not sure if I am having the same problem or something else.

Back Story: I have a "few" windows and tabs open in FireFox. I would finish what I was doing, shut down and then the next time I booted up and loaded FireFox, all sessions would be restored and all log ins honoured (kept). That is: I was still logged in.

(Moving to now) Yesterday I powered up and ALL sites were logged out. About 20 log ins were needed. Hmmmmm... gmail, and the rest.

"Ok... something happened. No problems, things should be ok from now. I've logged in, so all is sweet."

Today I power up: All logs ins lost. Had to go through it all again.

Gmail is throwing security alerts at me hand over fist. Yeah, that is good in some ways. I get that part. But I've logged in.

Seems - my thoughts - that the cookies aren't being saved. But why? I haven't touched them or their settings.

Yes, I did do a clean out of older cookies. But left the gmail ones, and other sites I know I use. I have `adblocker ultimate` installed.

Now I am logged in, if I open the `cookies` and look I should see them there for the sites to which I am logged in - yes?

To be clear: When I am done, I do NOT `exit` FireFox. All windows, tabs, sessions are left. I just shut down the machine. Then next time I load FireFox and they are re-loaded and log ins are maintained.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

  • previous.jsonlz4 (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.jsonlz4 from previous session that was loaded successfully)
  • recovery.jsonlz4 (latest version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • recovery.baklz4 (previous version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can try to restore a recent upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> when available or use a utility to browse Windows System Restore points to see if you can find a recent sessionstore.jsonlz4 file.

You can look at this tool to inspect a compressed jsonlz4 sessionstore file.

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to replace the current file with Firefox closed.

  • make sure to backup the current sessionstore.jsonlz4

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).

From about:support

I clicked the `clear startup cache`

Things looking good/better.

Nah, didn't work.  :(

Ok, I made a new profile and then started firefox with the new profile.

Logged in.

Quite that tab - closed session? (for the new profile)

Opened firefox with the same profile. Still logged in.

So I'll cop that it is something in the existing profile.

How do I "migrate" sections from the old (main / faulty) profile to the new one so I can find out which part is breaking firefox?

more options

teeny_weeny, you can look here, and try copying a few files at a time: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile Also try installing one addon at a time etc.

Sorry but to answer your previous question, I do not know how to manually save a Firefox session, short of bookmarking all open tabs at once, (ctrl+shift+D) then later re-opening them all from the bookmarks folder that you saved them to. That is the closest thing to a manual session restore that I am personally aware of. Unfortunately you'd have to repeat this for each window, to save that window's tabs.

Thanks, but I fear I am not getting something.

Scrolling down to the Copying files between profile folders part: What is written doesn't exist. There is no "open folder" button.

But moving on: it is difficult to really work through and copy files from the old (broken) profile and put them in the new profile's folder and see what it breaks.

But: slowly slowly..... slowly.

Ok, recapping on the story.

From the latest update to 102.0 every time I load firefox ALL pages previously logged in are logged out.

I have made a new profile ("blank") and it is now the used profile on starting firefox. It is working. I log into a few sites and if I reboot the machine and load firefox again, I am still logged in.

Talking with someone it was mentioned that Mozilla were copping a lot of flack about multiple people using the one machine and privacy between them...... Fantastic. Not really applicable to me. Though I shall state I have a few different accounts for demarcation reasons. A personal e-mail and an e-mail for forums I am in.

It was posited that because of this new privacy thing that Mozilla applied: because I am logged in with various e-mail accounts, firefox decides that they have to be logged out for "security reasons".

Fine.

So how do I get it back to how it was?

I have multiple accounts and it is OF NO CONCERN about this new feature introduced.

teeny_weeny, if everything is now working as it used to, then isn't the job now done?

Also I could be wrong, but I have not heard of any FF feature that logs you out if you have logged into several sites using different emails. Doesn't sound like a logical solution if the goal is simply to stop multiple users of the same machine from accessing eachothers logins. As anyone who can access your profile could still access your logged in accounts even if you only used one email for all logins.

more options

Well, it is (and isn't) working.

The new "PROFILE" I made is behaving itself, but the original one isn't.

I still don't know how to copy over all the open tabs, saved passwords and bookmarks from the older profile to the new one.

Ok, bookmarks: export and import. But sessions (a LOT of tabs/windows) and saved passwords. Beyond me.

more options

teeny_weeny, the link* I gave earlier shows the files you need to copy from the old profile into the new one, for various data types. For example, to copy over your passwords you need to copy over the two files "key4.db" & "logins.json".

Unfortunately I do not know a quicker method of restoring open tabs other than the method of bookmarking all at once for each window, then later re-opening them.

However, if you wanted to to you could try "refreshing" the old profile. This will essentially largely restore your old profile to factory defaults, but keeping some data such as bookmarks and passwords. This would save some effort in manually copying over data. You can read about it here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings#w_refresh-firefox (remember to bookmark all open tabs first, so you can restore them later)

But refreshing the original profile might not get rid of the old error, or you may wish to not do this. In which case unfortunately I don't see another way other than to go through the files in the previous link* and copy them into the new profile manually.

more options

(Not against you, but here's what happens)

I have the "problematic" profile and the "now working" one.

I copy the two files from the "problematic" profile folder to the "now working" one. (Firefox not loaded)

Start firefox and look at my "saved logins". EMPTY

So sorry: that doesn't work.

REFRESHING firefox would probably get the same result - but I seem to have things working now with the new profile I made - and would like to get all the saved logins from the other one, and - somehow - get all the tabs that are open.

more options

That would suggest a problem with both or either of the two files. You can temporarily set signon.debug = true on the about:config page and check the Browser Console after starting Firefox.

Do not forget to reset this pref after you are done testing.

more options

Thanks.

I'll give it a go shortly.

Um, ok, so to clarify what I am going to do:

I start Firefox (working profile 1 window) The broken profile loads...... 40 (nominal) windows. When do I run that command?

After loading the first (working) firefox and before loading the broken profile?

(And.... where is the log?)

Ok, found the "log".... Shift-Ctl-J and it opens.

Done, but I'm not sure it is.... "working".

It started and I waited a while first to make sure things were happening. I got a couple of complaints, but I fear that is to be expected.

I then went to the `about:profiles` and said launch new browser with this session. The windows started opening hand over fist. Nothing happening in this log.

I'm suspicious that is monitoring THAT session/profile and not the new browser with the broken profile.

So I'm guessing I need to set that debug thing, set the broken profile back to being the default then exit and start firefox again....

Yes?

But that doesn't make sense either. As that "log" needs me to press CTL-SHIFT-J to get it to open....... (Sorry, this is really flying in the dark for me)

Ok, new day.

I deleted the two files which MAY have been corrupt (saved log ins) and started Firefox. Also with "login.debug" set to TRUE.

This is something that is being shown often: moz-extension://687f32b9-63b1-4e6c-8fb9-9288036141de/background/event.js:146

Or more fully: Error: Please use $(ref:runtime.getURL). event.js:146

I've done a quick look for it where I suspect it should be and can't find anything looking like that.

Oh, and while I'm at it: When I was loading firefox today, I saw this flash on the screen. (Cropped)

Ok.... So after quitting I went to the updates thingy and sure enough firefox was saying "Hey, I have an update!"

I installed it - all good I guess.

Run firefox again and same message shown.

Went back to the update program thingy....

(this is getting worse.) I'll reboot (again) and try (again). (Gotta love well rolled out updates)

Right, rebooted, applied update - again - and this time I think it worked. Version changed to 102.0.1 from the previous 102.0

Looked at the login stuff....

WOW!

(See picture)

That isn't the worst part.

(It does get worse)

This is one I see further down.

Now, I copied this by clicking RMB on the message and selecting COPY MESSAGE. Which worked.

There is an option COPY ALL MESSAGES. It doesn't.

Now when I try it I am only getting THAT message..... So I'm guessing that is because the clip board already has that message there.

So, ok, "it" (Firefox) claims/states/says that files are missing. Interesting, as I haven't deleted any.

Well, ok I have, but putting things back to "day zero" (alas two days after the big upgrade which broke firefox for me) doesn't change things.

I'll back up the profile again (with new saved logins) and put back the original one I had before anything was touched.

more options

With a copy of the original profile (not working) I have shut down all but 4 windows and maybe 12 tabs.

With the debug set to true I reboot, load firefox and open the console.

This is an exert of what I am seeing.

There are a lot of sites I don't know who they are and some which I hope are being blocked.

Again, that first line has alarm bells ringing for me.

I have a profile - which is now the default - and it is working.

I start firefox and tabs are loaded. Further more, all logins are honored. So, with that, I would presume that they are "saved logins".... That isn't too far fetched - is it?

So when I go to `about:logins` I am perplexed when I see there are NO SAVED LOGINS.

And to further confuse the issue, I load another profile.....

ONE tab open (ok 3)....

It keeps me logged in.

But here's the "rub":

(See picture.) It says I have a saved log in. Which is the same log in as with the other profile and yet it says there are none.

If you reopen tabs automatically via Restore Previous Session then Firefox saves the cookies for these tabs in sessionstore.jsonlz4 as part of the session data what can make that you are still logged in on the next start, so do not get confused.

Can you use "Create New Login" to create a login that lasts to the next session ?

My head is spinning, and I am sure yours would be too if you have kept up with the entire thread.

If I make a new profile: It seems to be working. I can log into accounts and then when I exit and come back, they are still logged in. THE PROBLEM IS (now) if I have multiple windows and I exit, they don't seem to be restored. Only the last one that was closed.

I seldom EXIT firefox. I simply shut the machine down to avoid the above mentioned problem.

So the newly made profile seems to be working. I'll say seems to be only because already today I have been trying to work out what is going on for about 1.5 hours. It is not consistent when showing me saved logins. (See above pictures)

Oh, looking at the link: "How to restore previous sessions".... It is wrong. Shame SCREEN-PRINT doesn't capture menus, but that option doesn't exist. (In what I see anyway.) (See picture)

I have tripped over with multiple sessions all logged into an account (google). It (google) gets a bit weird when I am logged in to one e-mail from more than 1 tab in different sessions. It logs me out. I kind of get the reasons, but it doesn't help me because - as I said - I don't ever EXIT firefox. I shut the machine down.

So the only way I can get around that while testing different profiles, it I have to reboot every time or google logs me out from one of the sessions. If it is the newer one, it doesn't help me work out why firefox is logging me out.

I am also annoyed (not at you) but the NAMES shown in the logs. Can't find profile directory. XULStore.jsm:66:15

There is no such file as XULStore.jsm There IS a file xulstore.jsm though.

That also doesn't help me work out what is going on.
