Javascript has been disabled by some security add-on and I can't reenable it, what can I do?

more options

Windows 7 Professional Firefox 26.0

Javascript is disabled, and I can't find any way to reenable it. I have deleted all traces of firefox on my computer and reinstalled a new firefox and still the problem presists. I have MS Internet explorer installed, it has no problems with javascript. I believe the problem may have been caused by one of firefox security add-ons I used in the past.

I have used firefox for many years, but I'm going to have to switch to chrome if I can't get this fixed.

Thanks for any help

This library site is a little unusual.

(1) When I go to the main page, it is a frame around a different site:

 http://www.youseemore.com/mustang/

which forwards to

 http://www1.youseemore.com/mustang/

If JavaScript is disabled on that page, this appears at the top:

"JavaScript must be enabled on your browser for this PAC to work properly."

Do you get that message or if you click one of those links does that page look good?

(2) When I run a search for moby dick (I'm not logged in) it goes to this page:

http://156.110.26.122:8080/?config=ysm#section=search&term=moby%20dick

If JavaScript is disabled when I visit on that page, I get a gray page with instructions for enabling it in various different browsers. Did you ever see that page, or do you get the search results?

(3) If you return to the youseemore page and try to log in, does it work any better without that frame?

How do you know JavaScript is disabled -- are numerous sites reporting this to you?

You could try disabling your two Norton extensions and see whether those are the culprits. Open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column click Extensions.

If a link to restart Firefox appears above the extension after clicking the Disable button, go ahead and click one of those as the last step.

Any difference?

I know javascript is disabled because I can't enter my Library account in firefox which I can do in MS explorer.

I'll try your tip about the addons after lunch.

thanks for the help, Larry

I've got to log off but for site-specific issues, some other things to check are:

(1) Obsolete cached files or old cookies (see below), and
(2) Notification icons on the left end of the address bar, particularly the gray shield icon indicating insecure content in a secure site (see: Mixed content blocking in Firefox)

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites' cookies.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Disabling the extensions didn't help. Problem presists, I tried most of the tips listed on forum start page, with no good results, thanks for your suggestions, firefox is setup to delete all cookies on exit, the only cookies allowed are 3 finacial site. I have deleted firefox 3 times using CCleaner, I searched my computer and deleted all foxfire files and reinstalled foxfire 3 times, still no Javascript. It used to be: tools/options/content: had a box to enable/disable javascript, that has dissapeared from my PC.

I have 2 desktop Pcs.,both have similar configuration and setup, both have firefox 26, and both have the same problem with javascript. This has been going on for almost a year. I guess it's time to give up and use another browser.

Hi Larry, the checkbox was removed a few versions ago. Whatever instructions you have are out of date.

JavaScript is enabled when you install Firefox, and if it were really disabled, you would get notices on numerous sites on the web; the effect would not be limited to one site. That is why I was asking about other issues.

If you want to check the current status, you can use the about:config preferences editor.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box that appears above the list, type or paste javasc and pause while the list is filtered

(3) The javascript.enabled preference should be in plain type (not bolded) and be set to its default value of true. If it is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to switch back to true.

Could you post the address of the library website and briefly list the steps you're taking that generate the error?

Hi Jscher,

All the javascript entrys were true except for: javascript.options.ion.chrome;false

I Don't know what that means.

The URL for the library is:

http://www.mustanglibrary.org/ I click on: Your Account, enter account number and last name in caps. then the busy circle arrows appear and the input box freezes up.

I also was on the Norton web site and on one of the pages, I got the message to the effect "javescript is disabled on your pc" and couldn't access that page.

I don't have these problems with internet explorer.

I think the problems in firefox originated in one of the security addons I used, or in the configuration of Norton safe web and Norton Vault.

Oh! one other possible problem, I turned 87 last week, and am easily confused, so I may be beyond help even from a pro such as yourself, but I do appreciate your efforts.

Thanks
