My Firefox on a windows 7 HP laptop updated today (June 25th) and the zoom adjusted, changing the font size, as well as icons and zoomed in on websites. I noticed in the list of changes for the program it says "improved rendering on high-res displays" is this the problem and is there anyway I can disable this? I was quite happy with the resolution before, and find this tacky and annoying...

I've been using firefox for a really really long time, and I play quite a lot of facebook games. Yesterday morning, things were working perfectly fine, but later in the day, I suddenly started getting these shockwave errors. I can't recall downloading anything and I must have uninstalled and reinstalled the flash player at least 8 times. It's honestly starting to frustrate me. I love firefox, but if the browser refuses to work, I probably won't be using it for much longer.

I didn't have this kind of troubles before until the new version, I'm so frustrated that I'm really thinking to switch to Chrome instead.

And in case someone wonders, there isn't a request icon at ALL.

- Session restore brings up tabs that I had closed before closing Firefox. Sometimes it even selects a tab that I didn't have selected when I closed it.

- Leaking memory like nobody's business. It went from 500 MB to 1.5 GB overnight (i.e. while it was "idling" minimized on the desktop).

- The config.trim_on_minimize setting is missing. Why is this?

- When the memory usage gets above ~1 GB (FYI, this is a guess), I start seeing problems with Firefox displaying web-page graphics and even, in one instance, shutting down text input on a web page (this was within Facebook).

- Randomly crashes for no apparent reason. FYI, this happened after I updated to Firefox 28 as well.

None of these problems ever happened before I upgraded to Firefox 28 and 29. I'm very close to abandoning Firefox altogether if these problems are not resolved promptly and permanently. In other words, I've nearly had enough of this. Whatever happened to "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

Hello there,

I've had this problem for a long time, and I've done most everything suggested in other forums regarding this matter. I've disabled "disabled protected mode, disabled hardware acceleration, made sure everything is updated, and nothing works. Unfortunately, this makes Firefox so unusable that I've had to switch to another browser for the time being, but it's having it's own issues. Very frustrating! I like Firefox and would like to have it working, but this "shockwave flash plugin" problem has been a persistent problem for the last year.

I've seen many other users who have not been able to fix the problem via the above suggestions, so--what's the verdict? Is there something else I can try?

Cheers

Hello, everyone!

I've filed a bug report here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1004476 The problem is that after installing Firefox 29 with no profile at all and installing any addon that requires a browser restart (NoScript for e.g.) Firefox restarts OK, but after closing it and trying to open again I get a message: "Firefox is already running". I can see in the Task Manager that there is already Firefox running in the background. I've found several people complaining about this issue. Here: http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=19612 And here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2825639

Thank you in advance

2nd Update. (Comment by a moderator)
Engineers are working on issues that have been identified.
The known issues are problems with Firefox hanging on closedown resulting in Firefox not restarting unless the hung process is killed.

Workaround ensure Firefox is NOT set to clear History on Close down
Use NewButton New Fx Menu → Preferences → |Privacy| Firefox will: [Remember History v ]

after updating to firefox 29 and then 29.0.1, the cpu usage that firefox are using are insane,

it ranges between 50%-100% cpu usage.

and it happens even on normal non flash tab,

besides even if the site is using flash, i am using flash block and adblock plus,

so anykind of flash material wont play or uses cpu.

please fix this ASAP, because firefox has now gone from useable to resource hog,

oh and i don't like the new look, because firefox has become more similar to chrome on User interface,

and i don't use chrome, because i don't like the UI, and now firefox tried to be chrome twin ?

i think that's all, thanks in advance.

Hello

I have spent 3 days trouble shooting this and can't resolve it. Firefox won't load pages, just get a grey spinning circle forever. No other message. I close firefox and restart, it won't start as it is still running in background. Task manager will not close it. I have to reboot the PC. I have tried deleting profiles, which helps for a few minutes then it locks again. I tried re-installing firefox and again it works for a few minutes then nothing. I have completely deleted all 'appdata' and still no luck. New profile doesn't help. I checked all security settings, firewall, etc. and nothing helped. I tried safe mode and the problem still exists. I have used firefox for years and now may have to walk away. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

This is a continuation of a thread found here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997448 by Compumind.

I reported I was having the same experience, especially when opening links from emails in Thunderbird. I also reported I was forced to revert to FF 28.

Moses replied in above thread and suggested: (1) Download a fresh installer from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(2) Exit out of Firefox.

(3) Rename the folder

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

I followed these instruction carefully but no joy. Upon installing FF 29, not only would it refuse to exit (using "exit") and remain running in the Task Manager until I killed it after opening links from Thunderbird, but I found it refused to exit after simple browsing and following links.

Moses had asked I not reply in original thread so I am re-posting here.

I believe this is a serious bug. With Firefox 28...no problems except a minor one I reported here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1002089

Again I am forced back to FF 28, though I miss the beautiful interface and security fixes, I need to have a browser that works properly. My wife has never even seen the Task Manager before so this is problem.

Besides the "educated guesses" made with this post, the only other thing outside of usual that I do, is to have a security policy regarding cookies (don't accept by default...I make exceptions for cookies I want to retain and have a several that are only "allow for session.") I also have FF set to delete browsing history on exit, but that takes a split second.

I look forward to when this issue can be addressed successfully and I am able to use FF 29 (and have it exit properly...I can't expect my wife to follow all these instructions and close it often manually in the task manager...nor do I want to do this.)

Good luck on all the Mozilla projects. Having installed FF 29 twice and then reverted back to 28 twice, I am going to wait and see how this plays out. Please don't send me the standard, "start in safe mode", "restart with add-ons disabled", "reset Firefox" (last time that destroyed my browser completely) stuff. I do not believe this is what's happening.

Moses added that there is a problem with email notifications going through, so take your time, friends.

I captured the Task manager just before and after the update. I know that there is a legacy Flash plugin but it is set to never activate. How can I get rid of it permanently?

Ive tried everything in firefox so far but its just no working for me

i disabled addons manually to see whats gobbling up so much ram but nothing, i upgraded, downgraded all the plugins and nothing either (the new flash plugin was giving me issues so now im on an older one btw, was still having issues with recent flash version so thats not it) i added addons that supposedly reduce ram usage but nothing

i enabled and disabled hardware acceleration but nothing either

i cleared the cache and everything that firefox can clear except the browsing history but nada

i used speedfox to try and possibly fix this annoyance but nothing at all

i updated, downgraded, and basically did everything possible with my computer's drivers but nothing either

is firefox just meant to be like this and to behave like an app that never releases its RAM afters its used? in task manager its showing me anywhere between 1.2GB or RAM being used or over 2GB's!! this isnt normal especially since i have only 4 light tabs open, all this and to add to it the context menu loading when i right click is slow as molasses

please, please, can someone just help me here? i added a log thingy that could possibly help, idk whats even going on here anymore from this, one day firefox was great and using no more than 1 gb in total with over 100 tabs open but now with just 4 after firefox has been open for a long time its devouring a quarter of my total RAM, for a browser thats a bit insane, especially since in the days i used to use Opera itd use no more than 800MB at worst

I have Firefox pinned to the Windows 7 taskbar on the bottom of my screen. I use a desktop PC. Most of the time, when I click on the icon, it opens Firefox with no problem. However, occasionally when I first turn my computer on and click on the Firefox icon on the taskbar, it gets highlighted but the little circle doesn't appear and the highlight fades away without opening the browser. When that happens, I can't even shut my computer off without pressing the button on the tower. That only ever happens the first time I open the browser in the morning, and it seems to be happening every couple of weeks. Any thoughts about what's going on? I just had a virus removal done, so that shouldn't be the problem.

I've been primarily a Firefox user (with Chrome as back-up) for years, with only occasional, and minor, problems. I'm automatically updated to the latest version of Firefox.

So my browser life has been good--uneventful, even serene.

Until yesterday. Then Firefox suddenly stopped responding. Once, then twice, all together about five times yesterday, it would stop responding and I'd have to close the program and restart. And the pattern has repeated itself today. Sometimes when it's not responding I can still do things like open a new tab, but not download files or play a YouTube video--in fact there's a blank space where the video should be. Sometimes I can't even close Firefox in order to restart without turning off my computer.

Let me emphasize that nothing has changed in the manner of my Firefox use to possibly trigger all this. I'm doing exactly what I always did, nothing more.

My first awareness came when Windows notified me that Firefox had stopped responding and wanted me to click on "close program" in the dialog box and close Firefox, which I did. Windows said they would search for a solution, and let me know. At one point Mozilla came on the screen to announce a crash, and I filled out a crash report. Each time my first awareness of a problem comes when Windows appears in a little box and announces that Firefox has stopped responding. Soon after, the lack of responsiveness will become obvious to me in a variety of ways.

One notable point: if I restart Firefox everything will be fine for a while, and then, out of the blue, the unresponsiveness will recur.

I want to know why this is happening. Since my internet browsing pattern has not changed its nature, does the fault lie with this new version of Firefox? Or is there some malware that is responsible? I should emphasize that I've been using Chrome in the meantime and it has exhibited none of the problems of Firefox.

Actually, rather than my engaging in ignorant speculation, I'll just wait for analysis by the experts in this forum.

My laptop has limited RAM - about 2GB. Of the browsers I've tried (Chrome, Safari, Firefox), Firefox uses the least RAM, but it still uses around 1GB of RAM to display about 10 tabs (gmail, facebook, reader, and assorted other websites) - this seems insanely high.

Thinking back, this didn't seem to be a problem "back in the day", so to speak, so I tried installing Firefox 3.6 again.

Lo and behold, with the same addons and the same tabs open, Firefox 3.6 is using 300MB of RAM where Firefox 21 used 980MB of RAM. In addition, navigation is noticeably snappier in Firefox 3.6 - probably because it doesn't have to page to disk as often (which would often lock up my computer using Firefox 21).

I thought that newer versions were supposed to improve memory performance, not triple the required memory...

I had no issues at all with Firefox 22, but since upgrading to Firefox 23, my browser is becoming unusable. The biggest issue right now is that Firefox 23 crashes excessively when browsing Facebook. Sometimes I can't even fully load the Facebook page without it crashing, but I can almost always make it crash by just scrolling up and down and forcing it to load new content a few times. This happens even in safe mode, and even after following the instructions to reset my preferences.

Sometimes Google searches also crash within seconds of submitting the search, Firefox crashed 3 times in a row while I tried to search for "Chrome" to install it so I'd be able to look at Facebook. It's more inconsistent with Google searches though, where Facebook is just so completely unstable as to be utterly unusable.

As of midnight 12/12/14, Firefox started blocking plugins (in this case, Adobe Flash and Java Deployment Toolkit, possibly others as I've just been to websites that use those), saying that they're out of date. When I click on "Update Now," the Plugin Status page tells me that all my plugins are up to date. (I'm currently running Flash 15.0.0.239 and Java Deployment Toolkit 10.71.2.14, for the record.)

I get the point of this feature, and I really don't want to permanently turn on "always allow," but having to click two "allow" prompts every time I load a website that features Flash is quickly making web browsing intolerable. I'm on the verge of switching to Google Chrome over this.
