I have checked all my settings, everything in about:config is fine as far as session storing is concerned, i have tried using an add-on to save my session but the creation of 'sessionstore.js" is just impossible.

Are you erasing your history when you shut down Firefox??? Your browser can not remember where you have been the last time you were on the internet without the history saved.

more options

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

You can reset browser.sessionstore.* prefs that are user set (bold) to the default value via the right-click context menu on the about:config page to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Thanks for the replies. As I stated, my settings/about:config is in check and my history is not being erased, I am not in private browsing mode. I tried safe mode, I tried creating a new profile, I tried reinstalling Firefox, nothing.

Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default.
Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see a sessionstore name without .js file extension.
You can see the real file extension (type) if you open the Properties of the file via the right-click context menu.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

No I am absolutely sure that no such file exists anywhere on my hard drive, with the extension or not, if I had the file I wouldn't have a problem to begin with.

Where oh where did the sessionrestore.js file go? I tried to reproduce this with your settings, but the only time I did not see a sessionrestore.js file was in the profile folder of a profile that had not been used before.

This is what I did:

  1. launched firefox in the new profile, where the profile folder is not showing sessionrestore.js?
  2. closed firefox then open the profile folder to see a sessionrestore.js

Note: when I created a new profile I unchecked "Don't ask at startup" so when I opened Firefox, it would ask me what profile.

If you could take a screenshot of the profile folder that this add on takes you too, I would love to see what else might be missing so I can ask anyone if they have seen this issue too. For convenience:Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles and the add on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../open-profile-folder/

Or please try to update to Firefox version 26, the most stable version and let us know if the issue persists, we are happy to help!

http://pastebin.com/VNG1Hmfg This paste contains the full contents of my current profile folder. The 'sessions' subfolder contains nothing. I have tried creating another profile and the result is the same, at this point i might as well reinstall Windows.

Firefox doesn't have a sessions folder, so it sounds that you have or had an extension that created this folder.
This also looks like a snapshot when Firefox was running as there are sqlite temp files (sqlite-shm and sqlite-wal) files present.

What is the current startup setting?

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts"

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

If windows is not the problem, you could do a clean reainstall of Firefox, if there is important stuff in the profile now you can go to "about:support" and reset firefox. The profile data will be in a folder, then you can reinstall.

I basically did that and said that i did it in my last post. It did not work.

more options

Did you try to use Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time" ?

Firefox should create a new sessionstore.js file every 10 seconds if necessary to store the current (updated) session data.

Can you post the content of the prefs.js file on pastebin to check for modified prefs?

Again, i am absolutely positive that my settings are set correctly.

You are also saying there is a problem, so something is going wrong, thus the suggestion to use a new and clean profile and provide details of your prefs.

What is the add-on you referred to

i have tried using an add-on to save my session
  • Is that fully removed
  • What is it ?
    Full name and version ?
    Home or Support website ?
more options

The add-on is: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/ (Latest version i presume.) I tried it after my problem occurred hoping it would help, i haven't removed it yet.

Does this also occur when you disable the add on? Or are there any improvements that you have noticed?

more options

Yes it does, and no there are no improvements.

Glad you have found a solution.

I am Ubuntu user but it seems a rather extreme workaround to install GNU/Linux because of an issue with Firefox that probably related to Firefox customisation.

If you are now on a dual boot system you may still wish to investigate the original problem or you may have now given up almost entirely on Windows 7.

As someone able to install an entire new OS a sure fire fix to your Windows 7 Firefox problem would be to install Firefox Beta 27/28 as a separate custom install with its own profile. (At a later date you could consider migrating some profile information if it helps.)

Yes well, I tired installing Aurora AND Nightly while on Windows, still no sessionstore.js

But you will probably have run the other Firefox versions without ensuring it was

  1. in Firefox's safemode
  2. using a new profile
  3. AND ensuring all plugins are disabled.
