I am on a certain web site and an image is displayed on the screen. I want to save it to my PC. Instead of saving the one already downloaded and displayed Firefox downloads it again. This is a nuisance it wastes time and bandwidth. Is there any way to correct this? Some people have suggested 'save images' but this is no help whatsoever as the same thing happens.

Yes, that is how Firefox works most of the time.

You can look at one of this extension:

Cool, this behavior has long annoyed me but I didn't know there was an add-on to fix it. Seems to be working!

As I said in my question 'Save Images' does NOT solve the problem. It operates in exactly the same way and re-downloads the image.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Cache because Firefox will disable the disk cache in such a case

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Thanks for the reply, but Private browsing and clear history not engaged. Any other suggestions? I am not the only one to have this problem.

Is the disk cache actually working if you check that on the about:cache page?

There should be three sections: Memory Cache, Disk Cache, and Offline (Application) cache that you can ignore.
