Set Homepage to the thumbnail new-tab view
I want a new window to open with the thumbnails of my preferred websites.
I have set up the "Home Page" option with "about:newtab" and i'm pretty sure it was working until a few days ago.
I already searched the knowledge base and checked the parameters in "about:config" suggested in other topics (http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/931476) and they are properly set.
My machine I have an old 2008 macbook with 2 system boots: Leopard and Snow Leopard. I'm pretty sure this setting was working fine on both and now it isn't on the Leopard boot. I know this OS isn't supported anymore, but I set the "about:newtab" AFTER the last update which notified the system wasn't supported anymore.
Since then, i haven't installed any extension or theme: the browser is a stock install with the last update possible.

Thanks for the feedback. No I had just a blank page, no buttons or anything.
Turned out that also on my second boot (Snow Leopard) I suddenly had lost the thumbnails from the homepage.
I've been able to get them back though: I simply set to have a "Blank Page" in the Settings (via the button in the pane), closed the Settings, opened the window again and set "about:newtab" and now I have the thumbnails back.
I would say that was caused by an OS or Firefox update, but Firefox on Leopard is not receiving updates anymore and Leopard either.

What is happening now then ?
- Do you see the thumbnail spaces but they are blank ?
- Or is it some other problem ?
- Have you visited the pages concerned, again, now, whilst NOT in Private Browsing ?
I am not sure but I think the thumbnails themselves are cached. I think the chromeapstore.sqlite mentioned in the other answer merely stores the address of the thumbnails that are pinned.
(IIRC there was talk about saving them more permanently, but I am not sure that was implemented)
If I am correct then you will loose the thumbnails in some circumstances but they should be generated again after you visit the pages concerned, but you probably need to be saving History, and not in Private Browsing mode.

When I open a new window, I simply see a blank page, no thumbnail chrome or anything, like if the setting was set to "blank".
Yes, as far as i can notice, thumbnails are usually cached and refreshed on the last visit.
Do you see the nine grids?
If you have the new tab page (about:newtab) in a new tab then it is possible that you've hidden the nine grids and in that case you can click the 3x3 grid icon in the top right corner or alternatively reset the browser.newtabpage.enabled pref on the about:config page to its default value true.
