I give up. Step one (this happens under Windows 7/32)

FF offered to upgrade from 15.01 to 19.0. I let it, it could not complete (patch failed). So I downloaded it and installed it (upgraded). All nice - but impossible to use the browser, or the google search. One types the address or the query and nothing happens. So I reverted to a previous version of windows and all was well.

Step two.

I install on a different machine, Windows 7/64. All works, but I have a hell of a time moving the settings. After an hour or more, all is well. So I decide that 19.02 will work on the 32 bit machine as well...

Step three. I upgrade FF to 19.02 from the 15.01. All works, I am happy. I do some other things, stopping FF in between. The next time I start it, no go. Impossible to go to a website or to search. Hmmm, I think...

Step four. Uninstall FF. Wash the disk so there are no remnants. Download and install FF 19.02 using IE. It does not work!

So: does anyone have an idea why? Here are some more weird things:

- on the first try (step one), all worked perfectly well outside the FF home page. I could click on links to get to website, I could type new addresses to the bar and go to new websites, I could click on my google link and search. But NOT from the home page.

- I tried to look at settings. Played with proxies (no proxy being my choice, but I also try aytomatic detection). Nothing. So I clicked on help - and that is how I got here and can write this,

And no, resetting won't help, there is nothing to reset!

Thanks for reading and perhaps helping.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Download and save the Firefox installer to the desktop and start the installation with a double-click on the desktop icon.

You can find the latest Firefox 19.0.x release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Sorry, no. I went further, turned off antivirus and firewall. Still nothing....

More: FF was not on the firewall allowed list. I added it. Still nothing.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe mode:

  • On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
  • On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Will try (but there should be no add-ons, it is a fresh installation on a wiped disk (but I did not look in the registry). (thanks for the help, by the way, as I am very puzzled - what really puzzles me and makes me doubt most suggested solutions is that FF works perfectly from links etc)

Could it be that disabled Java 6.035 is the culprit?

more options

NO. More in formation: on the new tab, the search window on the top right does not say "google" as it should. The address and search windows are not functional, I can type there, but get no result.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I think I found the problem. Can someone confirm? The start page that 19.02 points to is defective. If I replace it with google.com or some such, all is well.

more options

Sorry, spoke too fast. Yes, the google.com works in the search bar in the middle of the page. So one can search, click on links and go there. But one cannot type an address to the address bar and go to that website. I remain perplexed. Especially since FF works fine on the 64 bit machine.

What is that not working start page?

Firefox has a build-in about:home page with a Google search field and an about:newtab page with 9 slots that show recently visited web pages.

But I have a FRESH installation. I could change the profile, but it surely will result in exactly the same behaviour. This said, Iwill try. Towmorrow.

Simply: Mozilla Firefox Start Page, the default (new installation install all defaults and I touched none when I started)

Let us be logical. Firefox 15.01 worked fine. Automatic updates to 19.0 and to 19.02 failed. Downloading and installing FF 19.0 and 19.02 over the old version results in non-functioning FF.

Firefox 19.02, in a fresh installation with all traces of previous installation removed (except possibly in the registry), is also not functional. The first run page appears, but search and address bars do not work. One can type in them, but nothing happens (not even "cannot connect, try again"). Changing the start page from Mozilla's to google's gives a google search bar in the middle of the page that is functioning. But the page itself is not: the address bar and the search window at the top are still for typing only, but for going to websites or searching.

Reset Firefox gives a slight relief: the FF himepage appears, albeit without the google bar in the middle. And, as before, the address and search windows do not react.

Conclusion: it is likely not, as I thought earlier, the Mozilla Start Page. Since a fresh installation on a 64 bit windows 7 machine works, I conclude that there is some conflict between Windows 7/32 and FF 19.02. I have no idea where.

HELP: does anyone know where I could find an older version of FF, like the 15 I had before? I could restore the system at the cost of a few hours extra work as I made many changes (not installing, but deleting).

Hello okofoto,

  • Firefox 19.02, in a fresh installation with all traces of previous installation removed (except possibly in the registry), is also not functional.

you mean that you have done a clean re-install ?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

if firewall or/and antivirus is not the problem, you check in safe mode and it is OK, you tried a new profile and it is OK, your connection is OK(no proxies etc.) and you cannot search, see: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

  • HELP: does anyone know where I could find an older version of FF, like the 15 I had before?

The default about:home page uses the default search engine as set via the browser.search.defaultenginename pref.

Is Google still listed as one on the search engines of the search bar?

You can check if you still have the XML files of the default search engines in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

No search engines are listed. And of course I cannot get to about:home or about:config or anything of the sort for the simple reason that FF simply does not react to such commands. My next tries are 1. install beta 20.0 2. if that does not work, delete FF and ALL its traces, including in the registry, and reinstall. (lucky I have a second computer)

more options

Make sure to delete the Firefox program folder(s) before (re)installing Firefox.

  • (32 bit Windows) C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
  • (64 bit Windows) C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\

The last method worked (not the beta 20.0). I uninstalled FF. I removed everything related to FF, all folders etc.. I edited the registry and removed everything. I washed the drive with 0's, Installed 19.02 - and it works!

My guess: registry entries, since I had done everything else before, with no luck.

Thank you all for your advice and time.
