Hi.

IRC channels may be inactive (especially if they are small).

Could you please run "/attach irc://moznet/chatzilla" or "/attach irc://moznet/firefox" in your ChatZilla window and check whether you get messages there after saying hi and waiting around an hour or so?

How are you?

I am getting ready to shut it down for the night, so this will wait for tomorrow. I will say that I tried #ircbar, #chat, and a few of the more popular channels, and no joy...same stuff. Could you tell me what "/attach" does? I was simply using /join, maybe this is the trick? I will try this later on, and post my success/failure. Thanks for the reply!

I didn't know that this was third-party. I have been at hackrus and didn't find any info on this issue, but I will check again. Do you have any experience with this sort of problem? It seems like this would be, possibly, a relatively common thing to happen. And just to repeat, I get the same thing happening using mIRC. Kinda weird.

Hi. Yes, /join is the same thing. (/attach just does the connect-to-moznet and join-channel things in one command.) I'm looking forward to seeing you at #chatzilla channel.

Good luck! As far as I know, connecting to and chatting on IRC should be as simple as

1. Picking the server you want to join (I use LimeChat for MacOS, so the UI is different compared to Chatzilla but what I do is select Server in the menu, and then Connect). For Mozilla's servers, that's "irc.mozilla.org" without the quotes. 2. Join the channel you want to join, by typing:

/join #nameofchannel (e.g. #sumo if you want to join the Mozilla Support Community backchannel)

If ChatZilla doesn't give you a way to connect to servers, I don't know what's going on.

Ok, here is the poop: I logged into moznet, and joined #firefox, and said hello. I got a response back. I am wondering if saying 'hello' was what corrected the problem. Still not seeing anything else, but just replies to my posting; all other messages are invisible to me. I should be able to see conversations going on among others on the channels. Still open to suggestions...

Also, is there a setting that might 'hide' incoming traffic to my client?

No, there is no such thing usually.

It looks like you could talk in #sumo channel, a channel for support.mozilla.com.

I am not sure what to try next...there is virtually no information on this problem out there, I stopped by #sumo earlier (and #firefox, #chatzilla, annd a few others. Seems nobody has any clue about this, thinking about just giving up on the whole IRC deal. I don't want to just stare at a blank chat window. Still googling my fingers to the bone here. Like I said, the same thing is going on using mIRC, maybe it's something with my 'puter. I will leave this alone for a while, and continue looking for more info.

Hi! You could try to say 'hi' in a channel and leave the ChatZilla window open for several hours.... I don't think there is a problem by the sound of it. Some channels simply don't get activity. There also is a irc://moznet/firefox which is larger than others.

No, this is not how IRC works. The channel is small (just 36 people), people are idling, you have to stay for at least ten times longer than that if you want to get a response.

Okay, that makes sense, but again, I should be able to see other conversations, right? If there are 3 on the channel, myself included, if the other 2 are chatting, I will see them, correct? We seem to be going around in circles here.

Yes, if the 2 others are chatting you would see them. If there is only 3 people it could take weeks to see them do that; they may be idling for a pretty long time.

If you could just try to join #firefox,#sumo,#chatzilla you would see a bot talking several times every 10 minutes (in #firefox) and generally #firefox is a largeer chanenl so talking to others would be easier.

I would simply recommend leaving your ChatZilla open and going to have dinner or something and then coming back, seeing what's new.

People most usually leave IRC client minimised and peek in just sometimes few times during the day. Some may be staring in it non-stop if they are discussing something actively but that is not something they do 8 hours daily or something.

I'm sorry that this is taking a long thread, but I'm sure that you would be able to use this as soon as you simply understand what waiting gives.

Thanks for your patience and understanding; while not always particularly intuitive, Mozilla IRC network is a nice place to be in.

This makes sense. I will do this and see how it goes. I am going to show this thread as "resolved" just to move on, although I have no real solution yet. This is easily the most frustrating problem I have had to tackle, and I would wager the answer is right under my nose. Story of my life!
