The hanging has appeared to stop on my end, as well. I do have Rapport installed, but did not update or disable it in the past few days. I would tend to agree with FARLUIZ that it is a compatibility issue that works itself out over time.

I still haven't had any freezes but am no nearer an explanation as to what has changed. I could well believe that Trusteer is to blame though, a FF upgrade at the start of this year suddenly provoked crashes when using gmail. It turned out that an out of date Trusteer was to blame, and once I upgraded everything was fine. The situation was not helped by the Trusteer console reporting that it was up to date.

No more "freezes" on Firefox 16 in five computers with no updates! Things like that send our credibility to the trash.

I think, however, that Trusteer Rapport did a "very silent update" without changing the executable and without changing the version number. This type of update passes by my firewall undetected.

For security reasons, Trusteer not reveal the "internals" of Rapport. Trusteer Rapport is a very hazy program.

Problem re-occurred today. Contacted Trusteer via their 'chat'. Advised to check manually for updates via the console the re-start my PC. Cannot see that helping much.

Well, it seems that Trusteer must have adjusted something at their end, I gave them my ID before the re-start and everything appears to be fine again, so maybe the problem was personal to my PC.

Hello All, I too am experiencing Firefox 16.0.1 freezing for a minute or so on some web pages. I too think it has something to do with my Flash Player plug-in. I do have the latest version of Flash Player. For me this all started when I upgraded to the latest version of Norton Internet Security (v2013). At the time I was using Firefox 15.0.1. Trouble shooting steps I took were to make sure I had the latest version of Norton downloaded and installed. I updated Firefox to version 16.0.1. No luck. Next, as an experiment, I uninstalled my Flash Player plug-in. I returned to a page that caused a freeze each time I tried previously. The problem I was having no longer occurred. Then I decided that my Flash plug-in was corrupted. So I uninstalled my Flash player and ran Norton Utilities to "clean disks" mode and selected only "clean flash player plug in". This cleared out everything. Then I reinstalled the Flash plug-in. This worked well. I tested the link that caused Firefox to freeze over and over and it did not freeze anymore. Then tonight, strangely enough - I was surfing around the Symantec (Norton) webpage, and ended up having Firefox freeze for a minute or so on me again! I went to the previously experimented on link mentioned before, and Firefox froze again! I ran Norton Internet Security again and did a full scan. No viruses (at least!). Then I started up Firefox again and it didn't freeze on my test page. I am posting here with hopes of a fix for this. Is this some kind of miss-communication between Mozilla, Adobe, and possibly Symantec. I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks, mrintrbl7

The general consensus of opinion, on this thread, seems to be that Trusteer Rapport appears to be the culprit. Do you use Rapport? Flash Player has caused me some problems also, though. Since its last couple of updates I have had to tolerate really bad audio stuttering on videos such as You Tube. I have seached the web for a solution for what does appear to be a conflict between Firefox and Flash but, although it seems to be a common problem, I have had no luck. Does the audio stutter apply to you too?

Detsi: Have you tried to turn off hardware acceleration in your Flash plug in? (right click on a flash animation - deselect check box.) Also turn this off in Firefox (under tools/options/general.)??

Thanks for your suggestion, mrintrbl7. Yeah, tried that with no luck. I am tempted to restart Firefox in its default state and add all extensions one at a time to try to identify the culprit. But I suspect that the problem lies with Flash as things were ok until the updates. Anyway, straying a bit off topic now.

I think your trouble shooting steps will tell you what plug in is causing you problems. Try it. Good idea.

Have you tried an uninstall/reinstall of the flash player plug in? Sometimes when you continuously update a browser, the Flash plug in can become corrupt.

If an uninstall and reinstall doesn't remove the problem, Adobe has this uninstall utility that would wipe everything clean so you can do a fresh reinstall. Although you are brave to use it as there is a small chance that it might mess with another application.

I think we're all missing the point. This thread was hijacked with the Trusteer Rapport issue (unless that was the original poster that brought it up). The issue here is just Firefox freezing up. Protected mode for Flash turned out the be the cause for me; I posted above the fix for that. I'm not sure if we're getting off topic talking about Trusteer as I don't believe that was the original posters issue, rather someone else's. Please correct me if I am wrong.

OK, the title of this tread is, "Firefox 16 freezes for 1 minute when accessing certain webpages, I think they're all using Flash". I have hopes to continue the discussion?

I am having problems with Firefox 16.0.2. when I load in some pages that have Flash movies embedded. Firefox freezes for awhile and then I get the message that the Flash player has crashed. I have the latest version of Flash installed.

It is strange that this happens in only some pages, not every instance of Flash embedded. I didn't used to have this problem. If anyone has a solution please let me know.

I have the freezing problem as well, apart from the fact that sometimes the system doesn't seem to be able to unfreeze and it causes the laptop to crash.

I have had problems with freezing before the FF 16 version, but now it is going on all the time. My system crashes all the time. I am considering switching to Chrome as this is getting too much of a disturbance.

I don't use the Rapport that is mentioned in the thread, but I do have Flash Player which has been giving me problems over the last couple of months. The way this freezing manifests however, is different from how the Flash Player problem manifested itself. I do not use Flash Player 11.3 anymore because of those problems. so it is not the 11.3 version that causes the problem with me even though that version is specifically mentioned in this recommended link: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Player_11.3_Protected_Mode_-_Windows

So what to do?

I'm up-to-date with Firefox 16.0.2, and have been having endless problems with Flash (which is up-to-date at 11.4).

Since I use Microsoft's System Interals Suite/Process Explorer, it has been easy for me to kill the Flash plug-in every time Firefox hangs, which unfreezes Firefox. Annoying, but not as annoying as killing Firefox and restarting it every time.

I did notice something interesting yesterday, however, while I was looking at Hurricane Sandy pictures on one of the news web sites - some of the time Flash would be okay, but on this site it would almost always hang.

I realized that it ONLY hung when a StubHub flash ad showed up - NOT for ANY of the other Flash ads. Sometimes Flash itself would give me the "a script is slow" dialog, but usually I couldn't click on it since it would hang, but when I killed flash, Firefox would un-hang and I could continue.

So it seems like it's got something to do with certain Flash "programs," not all of them.

Interestingly enough, that StubHub ad seems to be gone today, and lo and behold, no problems. I doubt it has to do with me submitting 50+ crash reports to Adobe, but you never know :)

I was doing some reading online and found out that the newer versions of Flash Player include a new security feature called protect mode. I suspect this new feature is causing problems with Firefox and some Flash media.

What to do? I am hoping Adobe and Mozilla get together and fix the issue. Perhaps in their next release version?

Here's my own story:

I can say FF started to p$%%s me off may be one year ago. I'm not about to tell my client to use Chrome as default.

As a Webdesigner I've been using it all the time (many convenient ext, such as Fire bug, Colorzilla, fireFTP...) for years with a dozen of opened tabs at least. I'm also a Thunderbird users with many accounts.

My PC is W7/64 pro since 2010, core i7, 6GB ram (now 12) and medium graphic adapter.

Things started to be difficult after FF14 (I think) and got worst month after month.

I tried every Windows optimization stuffs I could, checking updates for all programs I use, bios, hardware drivers with no significants results.

Since 2012 I can say the usability of my pc is worst than ever.

I ran a lot of rootkit searches, antimalware, CCcleaners and so on. Desactivated many FF pluging too. If those stuff led to some interesting discovers, it was not critical and the situation never got better.

Main point is that TB was getting frozen sometime for more than 30sec, FF also (if one freeze the other one, will freeze too). This will make other applications to freeze, but not every times.

The only clue is the hard drive access ALWAYS got saturated when this happens (100% input/output on main system drive C:, not fluctuating ) Response time is at his point between 2 and 10(!!) sec. The cpu is stillvery low as in normal situation, when HD access remains very low with peaks.

Since this summer those freezing happens more than 6 times per hour, so I'm hitting my head on walls and I never been closest to explode my pc.

Last week when W8 came up I decided to upgrade, excepting some improvement (yes ..I know, this is quit stupid) ... Despites the fact W8 looks a little bit faster (but I won't go into the disastrous ergonomic point of view) the freezing were still there. And worst than ever (the Windows desktop crashed 3 times in 2 days!)

I was about to try a full format, which would lead to serious complication to backup/restore when I tried the Mach10x solution (disable Protected Mode of Flash Player in Firefox)

The freezing problem stopped for me when Trusteer sorted out their bug. But I still have dreadful audio stuttering on (eg You Tube) videos.
