after doing a win 7 SP1 upgrade all versions of Firefox do not complete the webpage rendering. Basic graphics are visible as in body text, some design elements are visible, but buttons on webpages - this form included aren't visible for instance just above this text box there should be buttons for Italics, Insert a Link, Numbered List - but I can only see them by hovering over the empty space. Same goes for most web pages. Incidentally this also happens in IE 9 as well. Google Chrome is doing pretty good overall and may become my main browser even though I don't like how it functions and is laid out. Anybody have any idea at all what happened in SP1 that could trigger this? I have checked all settings in the display, graphics settings etc that have been suggested on other forum pages etc., It is not the Ease of Access settings unless there is something there that no one has come up with yet. Help??

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already discovered those suggestions/links before posting my question. You did however inadvertently lead me to a partial solution. Under Win 7 Control Panel there is a selection for Internet Options. Under Advanced I selected 'Use software rendering instead of GPU'. I am getting some graphics now, still not all. Why would this make any difference and will now have to check to see if this affects any other programs... [ Added: Nov 5. I have since toggled it off again and it didn't shut anything off. Odd how it helped trigger a partial fix.]

Still no backgrounds at all and things like the frame box around this reply are now visible. For instance I now get a yellow colour when I hover over the Add images 'Browse" selection below this box. Under Internet Options - Accessibility - There is nothing selected - not under 'Formatting' or User Style Sheet.

What is still not visible on this 'Post a Reply" box is the 'Italic', Insert a Link' and 'Numbered List' buttons above. Also there is a fairly large blacked out square between the avatar box and this text box.

I've exhausted everything I can see or feel comfortable altering until someone points me in additional directions. Under Internet properties there seems to be nearly unlimited possibilities for changes and tweaking.

What I don't get is why things that worked before SP1 don't work now.

Did you check the Accessibility settings in Windows?

If it happens in other browsers as well then you need to check that out.

Yes. Been there, done that - literally everything posted on the forums here so far. I suspect that it is a setting but with so many possible variables its hard to figure out which ones to go to when the defaults no longer work. I have found that selecting the Aero themes under Personalization helped more than anything... I've optimized the monitors - that helped a bit overall. However still no website backgrounds and many buttons/gifs are still not showing up. Also the visible frame around this text box I'm typing in is total white space, the lines are crisp but the round corner rendering is just a tiny little bit ragged. Also the Nightly Firefox 10a1 64 bit helped as well but still looks like the Style sheets aren't being fully read/rendered properly. No idea what to do from here... this does happen in both Firefox and IE but not Google Chrome.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

This may work for you. It worked for us. Go to Start > Accessories > Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center. Click on "Make the computer easier to see". Test the key combination for enabling high contrast, that is enter the combination: Alt + left shift + PrintScreen. Reply "No" to warning box. You may also need to uncheck the high contrast check box. You can re-enable it later. It worked for us. Backgrounds were missing from both Firefox and IE9.

Web pages dont open properly, no graphics just the text all lined up down the left edge. Speedtest.net doesnt complete all the graphics and the BEGIN button and the graphics under that do not load. IE9 and Chrome still work ok I downloaded and reinstalled FFox8.01. Nothing changed

If you use extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extension) like Adblock Plus or NoScript or Flash Block that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
