Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

Your User Agent shows that you have Ask Toolbar installed. Ask Toolbar has been causing many problems in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. So Remove/Uninstall that extension.

There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:

-> You can open the about:config page via the location bar and do a search for ask.com via the Filter at the top of the about:config page.

-> You can Reset all ask.com related Preferences via the right-click context menu to their default values.

-> To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. When you see a warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified are shown as bold(user set).
  • Preferences can be Reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.
  • In the Filter bar type keyword.URL to isolate that single entry.
  • In the Filter bar at the top again, remove "keyword.URL" and then copy/paste browser.startup.homepage
    • right-click it and choose Reset from the menu.
  • In the Filter bar at the top again, remove browser.startup.homepage and then copy/paste browser.search.selectedEngine
    • right-click it and choose Reset from the menu.

-> Close the tab and then Restart Firefox.

Check and tell if its working.

Thanks for the reply, I am following all your instructions and all is as per want you suggest untill I get to the about:config type in keyword.URL right click Modify and replace with http://www.google.com/search?q= and ok I then right click this new http and the option copy link location does not exist the option I get is copy, copy now etc so what is the alternative. Also while I have your attention I am trying to download adobe flash it starts downloading and then stops it asks can the program Mozilla Firefox be closed down this I have never encountered before are these two problems related as I am unable to download and I don't know how to close down Firefox as I am using it to surf the web hope this can be resolved also. The problem http://search.jzip.com/is on the list of options on the navigator toolbar when I click on the icon little downward arrow next to the bright yellow star. how can I get the item on this list deleted. Your proceedure was good and I followed it to the letter but did not produce the desired result http://search.jzip.com/ is still there and firefox still starts with it but I did some investigating to see if infact if it might be a type of viris so I searched in the reistry folders, and after some time I found jzip uninstall twice in the registry editor it looked as though it did not remove when I tried to delete it so I right clicked and deleted it but when I went back to it there it was again undeleted so I started the PC in safe mode and did the same thing again and this time it deleted but when I restarted the PC it appeared again it just won't go away if fact there are about five enteries in the in that folder and neither of them can be deleted it is called runonce in the registry editor what do you think strange or what by the way thanks for the reply. Hope you sort out this out and looking foward to hearing from you.

You have to do the following:

1) Go to C:/Program Files/Windows jZip Toolbar

  • In the folder there is an Uninstall file for the toolbar, Execute it
  • Delete the folder

2) Go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins

  • Delete JzipWebSearch.xml and SearchResults.xml files
  • If they are not there, Search for it in C:\ drive
  • Delete the folders

3) Open Firefox and type in the address bar about:config

  • When you see a warning, click I'll be careful, I promise
  • Type jzip in the Filter bar
  • "Reinitialize" (right-click and click Reset) all the values with jzip that are shown

4) Close Firefox and Restart => No more jzip startup page

Check and tell if its working.

Again thanks for the reply I found only one user.js and the information was as followers. Script: C:\Documents & settings Line: 1 Char: 1 Error: Object expected Code: 800A138F Source: Microsoft JScriptruntime error I opened it but there was nothing to delete I then went into C:/Program Files/ and that was all there was no windows Jzip Toolbar I then went into Mozilla Firefox\searchplugings but there were no JzipwebSearch.xml but I found 1 searchresults.xml file and deleted it. Going into about:config when I type jzip in the filter bar as I have done before there is nothing in fact I type jzip with search or .com etc no combination seems to bring a responce the only place that izip appears is in reistry editors that is (remove jziptoolbar REG_SZ.....cmd.exe/c RD/S/Q" C:\Program Files\Windows jzip Toolbar\datamngr\Toolbar") and that is the way it is written.

-> Disable All unknown Add-on from Add-ons Manager -> Extensions panel

-> Close all Web Browsers before doing this otherwise it will not work.

-> Open Task Manager -> End Process Tree of '"datamedia"' -> close Task Manager

-> click Windows Start menu -> Run -> type "msconfig" press enter -> in Startup section uncheck '"datamn~1"'

-> Open My Computer -> Tools Menu -> Folder Options -> View section -> select option Show Hidden Files and Folders

-> Search for toolbar in your C:\ drive. When you find any Folders, open them, inside these folders if you find Uninstaller files Run them and Remove the folders (which contained them) too.

-> Also check in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Uninstall any unknown programs like Windows Searchqu toolbar or Windows iLivid Toolbar or Bandoo Media or Media bar or other unknown Toolbar programs

This is all junk and you don't need it or want it. Restart your System

Check and tell if its working.

Again thaks for the responce, I went into task Manager but there was nothing resembling "datamedia" in the processess section. Then into the startup and services area and again there was nothing resembling "datamn~1" then I went into the section to allow hidden files and folders to be shown. I then did a search for toolbar in the C:\ drive and found quite a lot and went through them all and could not find one with uninstaller among them. Then went into control panel and the only toolbars found were family and Google good excersize but no result.
