Firefox randomly jumps back to the last page viewed

Firefox randomly jumps back to the last page viewed. It occasionally jumps forward as well and probably would jump forward as often as jumping back except that I immediately use the forward button to return to my viewing. It is as if a gremlin is randomly clicking on the back and forward buttons just to irritate me. Nothing with the keyboard or mouse seems to initiate it. No other button seems affected.
