Well here's the screenshot of my problem: http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7263/flashorsomething.jpg

As you can see preview windows on YouTube don't load. Also - user menu won't show.

I think it's a problem with flash plug-in, since the problem started right after I was updating it (even though I didn't need to I guess). And that leads to another problem; I tried to update it since instead of videos on people's profiles I would get error saying that I got Java Script disabled or old Flash version - it was wrong then, it is wrong now - now, cause it still gives me that error.

I post here, because on Google Chrome YouTube works perfectly fine.

I tried to reinstall flash, didn't help. Some suggestions?

EDIT: Also, now I see that YouTube on Firefox got some basic problems with functionality, like can't view "more" of videos description and so on... eh. It gots to be flash or something.

Interestingly enough I had this problem and spent the last 3 hrs tracking it down with the help of several VMs and about:support... but stranger yet is that I searched for Dom.storage.enabled (the key to the solution) and ended up here via google, even though that string is nowhere on this page... how odd (old cached copy?? if so, why was that comment/reply [re]moved??).

Anyways, I wanted to say that I fixed this by searching my variables in about:support as it filters out only the core browser vars that have been changed from defaults, as there are way too many to sort through if you have to root through about:config looking at every extension vars. (Note to devs: it would be handyto have multi-word inline search as well as the option to filter out non-built-in variables in about:config --> would make for some speedier problem resolutions)

The solution? Dom.storage.enabled was improperly set to FALSE. No clue what changed it, but it was definitely something in the last couple of days. I could view youtube videos individually, but would get the "Hello... javascript is disabled or you have an old version of flash" msg on any channel's main page. Also, I couldn't click on any of the java?-based controls on youtube, such as the like/dislike et. al. below videos, the menu that dropped down when clicking on your profile name in the upper-right, and many other issues as well. I also couldn't click on any "javascript:" links (nothing would happen) on, for ex., Asus' support site, among countless other oddities that have all been fixed with the solution below. I'm sure this would all make perfect sense if I knew a little more about the DOM storage but for now a rough practical description will have to do.

For those who skipped the above paragraph, here's the quick fix: Go to about:config and set dom.storage.enabled to TRUE and, unless you have other problems as well, you should be in good stead.

Registered just to share this one as we all need to give back to the help forums once in a while, eh?

Still amazed that you explained the fix SO damn well that even I, who doesn't know much about how to fix anything was able to understand and get it done. I hope you get this reply. I was still able to get YouTube through Google Chrome and IE, but I like Firefox, and it's just so much more convenient to not have to switch just to see YouTube. I looked all over the Internet for solutions, and found all these complicated ones involving uninstalling and reinstalling Flash and other stuff that turned out to not be necessary, nor did they work. If I knew you, I'd like to buy you a dinner or drink, whatever would be your preference, but it seems like you answered the question because you like to help people which is a beautiful thing, and I can't thank you enough.  :)

Same problem here for prolly about a week. Gmail contacts wouldn't load, YouTube button elements not working, no Gmail call phone. The DOM storage fix above cleared up the problem. I have no idea what might have changed, but trying to keep up with all the Flash fixes meant a lot of uninstalls and reinstalls, so something might have flipped that setting.

It is a problem with the Google site.
Google recently made some changes to the code and doesn't handle the case where DOM storage is disabled correctly. That throws an exception causing the remainder of the script not to be processed with the result that some content doesn't show.

Google is working on a fix of that problem as posted here.

Thanks for the follow-up... I don't like to leave anything like this unfinished but I have been busy on other projects. I briefly read through the link/posts and the problem being Google-wide makes perfect sense in retrospect.

The dom.storage.enabled solution fixed it for me, after trying a lot of possibilities like safe mode start etc.

I previously posted in Mozillazine about this and here's the link

Spot on, BCBIG, and well-done!

Google is chock-a-block with people seeking answers to the YT thumbnail problem in Firefox.

more options

after my flash update to version 10,1,102,64 , there were no thumbnails on the right side in youtube, and as we all know youtube uses adobe's flash player

the route i took to get to this problem, perhaps was a little different, but the end result was the same

allowing cookies, until i closed firefox solved it simply, and without rebooting

HOWEVER, a potentially devious implication points to possible scoundrels firstly in adobe's design of their flash player, requiring users to accept their cookies

depending on any particular browser's cookie settings, flows whether or not youtube is involved or not in each instance, but in any event youtube presumably is in a collusive arrangement to split the revenue from lucrative cookie feast, perhaps equally

next one would need to consider how extensive, and nefarious that cookie is ?

it seems highly likely in the circumstances that adobe [flash] is now leveraging it's dominance in conjunction with youtube to force acceptance of cookies by users, cookies which have no absolutely no functional value in a player, but are simply commercial spies ?

youtube and adobe you are both nasty and devious, because i saw no up front notice from them that this is what they're up to ?

would someone help by looking at the eula, perhaps the one of adobe first, which doubtless contains a subtle and vague variation which reveals their sneaky actions

AMENDMENT

ON REFLECTION, in all probability, i don't think youtube was involved, and i say that for several reasons, including that when firefox's cookie settings were changed to allow cookies, the page loaded as it always had, including correctly displaying thumbnails on the right, meaning that youtube transmitted the correct data, and as best as i recollect, i think other sites similarly had this problem, also, the extent of secrecy required to carry out such a scheme would've resulted in an inevitable leaks, and finally i don't think youtube would join in a plan to deliberately disable, or sabotage the correct display of its web pages and offering

THAT LATTER LINE OF THOUGHT ALSO adds to my realization that even adobe would most unlikely secretly disable the proper functioning of its software to such an extent that those who were required to use their player software, and to make settings changes, were mystified as to a clear cut method to remedy the failure

THE UPSHOT is that both are absolved, at least temporarily of any skulduggery, only on this particular issue however :)

ACCORDINGLY, one conspiracy theory bites the dust ... i wonder if all conspiracies in the world are at an end ? NAH !

SOLVED, i hope

PROBLEM: firefox would not display youtube thumbnails

SOLUTION:

BACKGROUND: the kernel, and source of the problem is that firefox completely accepts [ ie is overridden by ] the security settings in windows internet explorer's "internet options"

SOLUTION: it was in those security settings where my lack of detailed knowledge generated the problem, that firefox is subject to

i temporarily uninstalled firefox [ and flash ], and forced myself to become somewhat familiar with this area, the upshot of which is that the thumbnails etc now correctly display in internet explorer

hopefully, as i start reinstalling software the problem will be solved, in any event, if it's not, the security settings which i have changed will no longer be the impediment that they were

MY ORIGINAL ASSESSMENT WAS CORRECT

TRACKING COOKIES, AKA SPYWARE are the nasties embedded in flash, and need be enabled, for the peripheral preview panes, or thumbnails on the right, in youtube for instance, to show

ADOBE'S latest iteration of flash requires users to enable FLASH TRACKING COOKIES to use a host website fully, THAT'S WHY ADOBE IMMEDIATELY AND SLYLY REMOVES OLD VERSIONS OF FLASH FROM THEIR WEBSITE, VERSIONS WHICH WERE NOT SO UNDERHAND, OR SURREPTITIOUS ie they deliberately and covertly disable peripheral aspects of a video to snoop, BECAUSE if the primary video was disabled users would simply BECOME AWARE OF WHAT ADOBE WAS DOING and discard flash

MACROMEDIA, THE ORIGINATOR OF FLASH BEFORE ADOBE GOT THEIR SLIMY HANDS ON IT, WERE WELL KNOWN SNOOPING SCUMBAGS IN THIS TRACKING AREA; ADOBE IS NOW CARRYING ON MACROMEDIA'S NASTY PRACTICE OF SNOOPING, OR SPYING, ON USERS MORE BLATANTLY BY THE INSERTION OF TRACKING COOKIES IN THEIR FLASH SPYWARE

whether or not the host websites, such as youtube, participate in the lucrative revenues from this commercial spying, i haven't yet determined

My DOM setting is TRUE already - I just looked... I still can not view video through firefox. I can through IE though! Cookies are enabled.

The only reason I switched was because I read I could set my yahoo email to be the default when I clicked on a link on another page - and that doesn't work either as Outlook STILL pops up. I'm in the country with a hot spot and have to use yahoo!

Not sure firefox is for me - two strikes already. Any ideas?

To those who already tried the dom.storage trick, if you are using the add-on ADBLOCK PLUS it may be causing the problem like mine was for some reason. GO TO: youtube.com

Click the ABP icon in your toolbar and click: "report issue on this page"

Select: ABP is blocking too much

It will then run a quick scan, and if you it finds something that you blocked on your own, you can disable it and it worked for me.

Same problem here.

Turns out:

  1. javascript was enabled
  2. the latest Adobe Flash was installed
  3. dom.storage.enabled was already set to 'true'
  4. cookies were already being accepted

I followed cor-el's solution somewhat, and it worked for me. I CLEARED COOKIES AND CACHE, AND YOUTUBE WORKED IMMEDIATELY. Thanks for the hint, cor-el.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access the about:config page.

  • Use the Filter bar at the top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
  • Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean) or by double-clicking the line with the pref
