copied password files not working on second PC
I looked up the information regarding the password files for FireFox 3.6.x on the web... it is my understanding that everything is in the files signons3.txt and key3.db. However when I copied these files to a FireFox 3.6.x instance on a second PC and launched FireFox, the password list (under security) was empty. What other files or procedures are needed to export/import passwords from one PC to another? Also, it would be nice to have this feature added to the native FireFox user interface... I am not comfortable with using an add-in for this as you can never be sure that your passwords are not being compromised by the add-in program.

Firefox 3.6 does not use signons3.txt, it uses signons.sqlite instead. You need to copy that file and key3.db

I have a very similar issue, except that I'm dual booting Fedora and Ubuntu and trying to transfer my old profile to a new one on Fedora. After copying the signons3.sqlite and key3.db files, and opening FF with the -profilemanager option, a pop-up appears with "Could not initialise the application's security component..." and the passwords have not been transferred. Hmmm....
Did you also copy secmod.db (and cert8.db) to that new profile?
If you did then delete secmod.db.
Did you check the permissions of all the files in that folder?
If the "application's security component" isn't working then the password manager can't access (decrypt) the passwords stored in signons.sqlite

Firefox 3.6 does not use signons3.txt, it uses signons.sqlite instead. You need to copy that file and key3.db
This correct but you have to close and re-open FireFox after you copy the files.
You shouldn't have Firefox open if you want to make changes to files in the Firefox Profile Folder
