I don't like the bloat my bookmarks file is subject too when icons are captured with the bookmarks. Is there a way to suppress these images? They're absolutely unnecessary and really explode each bookmark that has them The image is larger than all other data in the bookmark!

Thank you, cor-el. I'm a happy camper now.

Setting browser.chrome.favicons & browser.chrome.site_icons to true keeps them out of my database, and the Delete Bookmark Icons add-on cleaned out those I already had.

Are you referring to exporting bookmarks to a file bookmark.html ? Do you still want to see favicons on the location bar or on tabs or remove them everywhere?

Delete Bookmark Icons: http://www.sephiroth-j.de/1/mozilla/#delsiteicons

Good point. I forget that bookmarks.html is no longer the active bookmark database.

I'd like to eliminate them altogether. I don't want to see them when I browse my bookmarks and I don't want them in my exported bookmarks.html file.

If I can only have one, I'd like to keep them out of my bookmarks.html file. I use that file a lot. Those icons really get in the way of the bookmark data.

As far as that goes, I'd like to suppress the bookmark Tag and Description fields too. I never use them. (But at least they're ASCII and are easy to ignore.)

You can make Firefox 3 create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when you exit Firefox if you set the pref browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true on the about:config page.

That backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and path via the pref browser.bookmarks.file on the about:config page.

Note: an HTML backup doesn't preserve tags and annotations, so you lose those if you need to import the HTML backup.

You can suppress favicons by setting these prefs to false: browser.chrome.favicons browser.chrome.site_icons

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
