Hi everyone,

I'm trying to access some old emails which I know were stored on a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04. The laptop was wiped years ago but I have restored the data from a backup in October 2023 or thereabouts.

When I try to open Thunderbird it throws up a dialogue saying 'You have launched an older version of Thunderbird' suggesting I need to re-create my accounts. I just need to access the emails from the restored data and I'm worried if I connect to the mail server that my settings might just erase the emails all over again.

What should I do?

  1. click help>troubleshootinginformation
  2. scroll to 'profile folder' and click 'open folder'
  3. if file is IMAP, then open the imapmail\<IMAP account folder> and locate the inbox and sent items (but ignore the msf entries). Or do the same if POP, go to the Mail\<POP account folder>. OR COPY (not move) to the Mail\Local Folders folder - then you can view in Thunderbird

A simple approach is to use https://onlinemboxviewer.com/ to view the message folders as they are in file explorer, such as inbox, sent (but NOT the msf entries).

It sounds easy enough but I'm not that tech-savvy these days... A couple of follow-ups...

Where do I find the mbox file within the Ubuntu file structure? Will this service allow me to see and access attachments?
