I want to copy a mail subfolder from a Windows 10 PC to a new installation on a Windows 11 PC

rwintjen

The Windows 10 PC crashed after an update, but I have command line access. I copied the profile folder from the Thunderbird installation to a USB drive, but can't find a way to move the subfolders (like 'name' and 'name.msf') to an existing installation on the new PC.

Is there a way to import these into the new installation?

If you copied the active profile **, these steps will transfer it:

  1. copy profile content to external media
  2. install thunderbird on new pc, downloaded from thunderbird.net
  3. start thunderbird
  4. click help>troubleshootinginformation
  5. scroll to 'profile folder' and click 'open folder'
  6. exit thunderbird
  7. delete everthing there
  8. now, paste contents of exported profile
  9. if there is a compatibility.ini file, delete it
  10. restart thunderbird

    • You will know if you have the profile if you see the files abook.sqlite and prefs.js in it.

Thanks, that worked. I didn't want to blow away the profile, for fear it would break Thunderbird, but now, everything is back. Plus, all the emails received since the crash are still on the server, so got those back, too.

Great! Thanks for the feedback. I was glad to assist. :)
