How to remove Ctrl tab switching shortcuts?

I only use Firefox to play two browser games that both use the 1-5 keys as an alternative to clicking the mouse. Accidentally clicking Ctrl and switching tabs out of nowhere is becoming a really annoying problem, but I don't see any way to just turn off shortcuts and hotkeys like other the other browsers I use. Is there any way to do this? Even a specific extension that makes the Crtl button do nothing would help, the one I was recommended won't download due to a "corruption".

Hello Maybe, Customize keyboard shortcuts in Firefox https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-keyboard-shortcuts-firefox https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/customizable-hotkeys-is-live-please-help-us-scope-version-2/td-p/116793

I didn't see any Ctrl+1-9 options there, but I cleared everything other than Copy/Paste anyway and it's still behaving the same; with Ctrl+1-9 still changing tabs.

Zero, I don't think that there is any native way to disable the ctrl+# hotkeys at present, unfortunately.

One possible workaround is to play the game in its own window where it is the only tab? You can open a new window from the File menu, or via the ctrl+N hotkey. Or if you launch the site from a bookmark, right-click it and select "Open in New Window".

With only one tab the ctrl+# hotkeys should do nothing, so thought this might be a good enough workaround?

Yeah, you're right, seems I'll just have to play in multiple windows for now. Thanks for mentioning this, though, I didn't really think of that.

I had the exact same issue while playing browser games in Firefox. The Ctrl + Tab switching is super annoying when you accidentally press Ctrl and suddenly your game tab changes. Unfortunately, Firefox doesn’t have a built-in option to completely disable that shortcut.

What worked for me was going into about:config and changing the tab switching behavior. You can search for browser.ctrlTab.recentlyUsedOrder and set it to false. It doesn’t fully disable Ctrl + Tab, but it makes it less disruptive.

Another option is using an add-on that lets you customize or disable shortcuts. Some keyboard shortcut manager extensions can override Ctrl combinations. If one extension shows as “corrupted,” try reinstalling it or testing a different one — sometimes profile issues cause that error.
