Thunderbird new install on mac crashes right away
Hi - I'm trying to install Thunderbird on my mac to get away from a google workspace account. I've downloaded it a couple times and it crashes immediately after the login screen. Same thing in Troubleshoot mode. It's a work computer so it might have something installed preventing the desktop app from working. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Awesome! That worked. Thanks so much! Amazing. Made me even more glad to be trying to get away from google. I now have a different question about importing all my old emails from Google Cloud Storage into Thunderbird. Forgive my ignorance, but should I start over with with a new question to the Help forum? Thanks and thanks again!
Yes, a new discussion. Before that, if you have many thousands of messages, it would be good to learn about Google Takeout from Google and this forum.

Now is it a crash of a hang? I am seeing more and more folks referring to a hang as a crash and they are in reality very different things with very different methods of investigation.
If is is a crash, what are the crash ids. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports
Hi Matt - thanks for replying. Appreciate your help. The header on the error window that pops up says "Crash Reporter" and the text uses the word crash 3-4 times. Took a screenshot, attached.

Can you describe what you mean by "login screen"? Does it look like my screen shot showing the Account Setup tab which is displayed on Thunderbird's first start, or each following start as long as no account has been set up?
So what are the crash ids you reported so we can actually look at the details. That is why I gave the link to locating them. It saves a load of time and assumptions to gust look at the cash report. It might even contain links to previously reported bugs for the issue.
Mapenzi: Yes - that login screen looks just like your screenshot.

So your Mac crashes as soon as the "Account Setup" window is displayed or somewhat later during setting up an account? Looks like this bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1987786 .... Which macOS version are you running?

Correct. But the patch in that bug for version 146 hasn't fixed everything. So the next step is in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2000912
I'm running Ventura 13.5.2 (22G91)
In the meantime, instead of waiting for a bug fix, you could install the 140.6.0esr version and switch to a future 147 default-release version when the bug gets fixed.

Any concerns about downgrading?

Thanks, Rick! Since the 146 version always crashed on startup there wasn't even the possibility to create an account. But you are right to ask this question: I just noticed that a first start and immediate closure of Thunderbird creates a virgin profile which contains a compatibility.ini file! Anyway, I wouldn't advise to reuse a profile which has been generated by a dysfunctional Thunderbird version.
@Ben: you should delete the TB 146 version from the Applications folder and also remove its symbol from the Dock. Then remove the entire Thunderbird folder from your user library ~/Library/Thunderbird/ On its first start Thunderbird 140.6.0esr will create a completely new Thunderbird folder in your user library .
Awesome! That worked. Thanks so much! Amazing. Made me even more glad to be trying to get away from google.
