Some web sites such as Amazon have an options bars to select items like 'review order'. When the web page first comes up, they show white in the dark bar. But Firefox is immediately changing the white to purple so that it is almost impossible to read. I haven't been able to find anything in settings to correct this. I do not have this issue when I use Chrome.

Hi,

Could you show us a screenshot about this issue?

Maybe the color change indicates that it is a visited link (purple is the color for visited links). But websites usually would override that to maintain readability. Are you using any settings or add-ons that might modify link colors (override website styles)?

If you made a change because of Google's recent decision to make all links purple, there are other ways to deal with that. See: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1516473

Since I've been waiting for a response, I wanted to check if you need something beyond the example screenshot? I just sent the portion across the top, you need to look closely to see the purple letters against the black. In case I didn't mention it before, when I first open the Amazon website the characters are white and readable, but change quickly to purple.

On the Settings page, "Language and Appearance" section, can you double-check that the new "Contrast Control" feature is set to Off?

Do you use any add-ons that modify website or link colors?

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache (only select "Temporary cached files and pages", don't clear other kinds of data)

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that. Firefox will ask you to confirm; go ahead and confirm.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Troubleshoot Mode: In this mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

I've got it set to automatic(use system settings)--everything is fine except for the purple lettering. I tried off and didn't like the look. Also played with the contrast controls (which I found a bit confusing) but couldn't find anything better. No add-ons that would impact colors that I'm aware of, I try to make minimal changes to my system. The issue just popped up suddenly several weeks back. Since I don't see the issue with Chrome, I think that something must have changed within Firefox.

Do Automatic and Off look very different on your system? If so, we may have different Windows settings. I tried to research those, but I didn't see how they influence link colors.

The only thing different than it was in the past is the purple where it was white before. When I go to off, it looks so much different than in the past that I turned it back to automatic. I suspected Windows settings, but since Chrome doesn't have the issue I discounted that idea.
