Dear all, as the Read it later app Pocket is now closing (sadly) could anyone recommend an alternative app, please? Be great if it was open-source, Marek

Hi Marek

It is not really our place to recommend an alternative here, but I know from my own research that there are a number of different options, both services you can use or (for those more technically inclined) to host yourself.

I recommend having a look online for Pocket replacements and see what is available.

Paul, given that alternatives were assessed, is there any documentation of the reason it was decided to shutdown entirely rather than remove or limit the free plan? I'd used Pocket for decades, and I would have seriously considered switching to a paid plan if forced.

Sure, that decision would have brought anger from some. Was it decided that the "cost" of community response to complete closure was more palatable than the "cost" of cummunity response to "only" removing or limiting the free plan? And that no amount of increased revenue would exceed that "cost"? Just seemed a bolt out of the blue when we saw that you'd simply be shutting down.

But inquiring minds would appreciate more perspective on the decision, if it's available. (More than the "learn more" page currently offered I mean, which is about logistics. And even more than the one it points to, which is more about pr/future.) If there's not more available that's your prerogative, of course. Just asking, not demanding. I'm certainly grateful for the service while it lasted.
