Other than using VPN (which is too expensive for me at this scale), is there any way to set my computer so I can access maps without the "Gulf of America"? All I need is to appear to move 100 miles north to Canada.) I found MapQuest, good for directions, but would like the other features.

Can't believe Google rolled over so easily. Bing doesn't surprise me at all.

Hi Annie, if the name depends on your IP address, it is difficult to think of an alternative to using a VPN if you plan to use the service directly. There is a free version of Proton VPN you could look at, but it's not clear from the description how the country is selected (https://protonvpn.com/free-vpn).

There might be an indirect method to access the map using a remote computer to request the site. There are some services for developers that provide use of a variety of browsers installed on remote computers, but I don't know whether you can choose your country to view from.

Oh for... not sure how long it has been changed as it was more recent but even on https://www.google.ca/maps/ they now have mention of Gulf of America for the international body of water though they are doing it as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" on the map.

Annie:

I am Canadian, accessing the internet (without VPN or my employer's network) from Canada .

I have been getting the "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" since this whole kerfluffle started. I find it offensive that Canadians have to see this, but then I also find it offensive that all our Provincial entities in Canada are called "State" by Google (Google generally just barely tolerates Canada, and cannot wait for us to become the 51st state); it also sticks it to us with many of their apps having no option for Canadian English). So it's not just you. UPDATE 2025-03-11 Google now differentiates Provincial Parks and State parks! On their 'Maps' app, it doesn't indicate whether Provincial, Federal or Municipal for 90% of the parks, but for some it does, and if you open the park for more detail, it will indicate if it is a Provincial Park (up until just days ago, it was still saying "State Park". Thank you Google for finally fixing that!

Note it still gives me "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" which is offensive, because that's the name given by a country trying to annex us, so why should Google force us to use our oppressor's naming convention? Note also that there's still no Canadian English spelling for many apps, despite tens of millions of speakers, while tiny populations of tens of thousands get their own dictionary. But maybe Canada has moved up from 'utter contempt' to 'barely tolerated'.  :D

It was still Gulf of Mexico on Google Canada maps for a few days after Trump did his own name change of Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America even though the name of this international body of water has actually not changed in reality.

One of the CEO's that attended Trumps inauguration was of course the Google CEO so no surprise they changed it to Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) for Canadians users on Goggle maps to see.
