A different O/S than Windows
I was wondering if you were aware of any projects in the computer industry to come up with a new PC O/S since windows has become so unfriendly and autocratic with win 10 & I imagine 11 as well? As you are one of the more important players in the home and business computer world, I figure you folks would know much more than I, and know it way before I do. I do not want to get another windows machine. I had to fight it to get your superior web browser to be and stay the default browser over something called "edge", as an example. Us Boomers have been buying PC's for 40+ years and the software too. Then we choose what we want installed and ignore the rest. And we never heard of buying a program then also paying rent to some overlord. Talking to friends of similar age, this is a huge reason PC sales are falling. Win 10 &11 were such a traumatic shock to us. My wife (age 72) was so angry she went out and purchased Apple notebook, ipad and iphone and gave her windoze junk to the trash man after a thorough scrubbing. At age 72 she undertook learning a new O/S to get away from MSFT. (I try hard not to get her real angry!)
Thank you in advance for any help you may provide. I think quantum computers are a few years out yet, so there is a need.

In your research, have you come across Linux? It's an open-source operating system that runs on Intel-based computers and can be used as a replacement for Windows. Many Windows XP users whose computers couldn't be upgraded tried out Linux a few years ago.
The interface (shell) on Linux systems doesn't have the same polish as Apple and Microsoft products, but if you harken back to the old days of Windows 95-98-2000-ME-XP, then you might find it oddly familiar.
One way to try Linux is to download a CD image and burn it to a CD (this assumes you have a computer with a CD or DVD drive and at least one CD-R/CD-RW or writeable DVD disk. I'm sure there are other options, too, but it's been a few years since I looked.
Of course, Firefox is available for Linux, but unlike Windows, where Mozilla creates the same build for everyone, different Linux distributions can customize Firefox for their flavor and therefore some things may differ.
Any search for "best" or "most popular" Linux distribution will return plenty of results. Of the many options, one claimed to be a good match for Windows 7 is Zorin OS, but I've never tried it myself: https://zorin.com/os/
Note that in a lot of cases you can copy the disc image to a USB drive and boot from this USB drive, especially if the image is larger that 4GB. You probably need to press a key like F8 while starting up the computer to open the boot menu.

Linux (with the now huge list of distro options) has been around for a very long time and have gotten better and better over the years and can be a wonderful option for older hardware that originally had Windows XP or Vista. Though 32-bit Linux distros are going away. Support for gaming and game launchers like Steam and others have improved greatly over the last years with the popular "Steam Deck" console helping to support steam games on Linux. Only reason I would even use Windows now is for games I could not run on Linux.
I personally prefer using the light Xfce Desktop Environment over say heavy options like GNOME 3 and KDE.
If you do try a Linux distro, one package to make sure you install after OS install is FFmpeg so you can fully support HTML5 players for videos, audio and games as the Flash Player from Adobe is not longer used on any OS.
